Vancouver gets forward Linus Karlsson in exchange for forward Jonathan Dahlen.

Key Players

In Dahlen, the Sharks get a shifty playmaker that has creativity and technical skill. Dahlen has yet to play in the NHL, but he has 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in 50 games this season with the AHL’s Utica Comets. The young forward will now move over to the San Jose Barracuda, who are the Sharks’ AHL affiliate. He came over at the end of last season after spending time in the Swedish League with Timra IK. Dahlen was drafted in the second round, 42nd overall of the 2016 NHL draft by the Ottawa Senators. He also played with rookie sensation Elias Pettersson at Timra and had great chemistry with him.

In Karlsson, the Canucks get a player with good size, goal-scoring ability and solid hands. He currently has four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 43 games for Karlskrona HK of the SHL. The young Swede was drafted in the third round, 87th overall by the Sharks. Karlsson has played for Sweden internationally at the Under-19 and Under-20 levels. The 19-year-old was named the league’s top player with Karlskrona Junior in the SuperElit league.

What This Means for the Future

Both players look to have strong upsides in their career. Dahlen seems to be closer to the NHL, but that’s because he is two years older at 21.

Karlsson has shown skill and has played for his home country in international events at the junior level. Vancouver general manager Jim Benning is very high on Karlsson, who had three assists at the most recent World Junior Championships.

CLEVELAND, OH – JANUARY 06: Utica Comets left wing Jonathan Dahlen (54) was traded for Linus Karlsson on Feb. 25 (Photo by Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

The Vancouver Canucks have agreed to trade forward Jonathan Dahlen to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Linus Karlsson.
