The New Jersey Devils<\/a> have agreed to trade winger Marcus Johansson<\/a><\/strong> to the Boston Bruins<\/a>. In return, the Devils receive a 2019 second-round NHL Draft pick and a 2020 fourth-round draft pick. The Devils will also retain 40% of Johansson’s remaining salary.<\/p>\n

In Johansson, the Bruins get a veteran forward who has spent the last three years on the wing but also as the ability to play center despite\u00a0poor numbers in the faceoff circle. The 28-year-old forward has played in 72 career\u00a0Stanley Cup Playoff games recording nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in those games.<\/p>\n

This season, he has scored 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points, adding eight minutes in penalties in 48 games. His possession numbers are 48.5 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of +0.7. Those totals are better compared to last season, where he scored five goals, and nine assists for 14 points in just 29 games played. Over his nine-year NHL career, Johansson has played for the Washington Capitals<\/a> and the New Jersey Devils. In that time, he has 119 goals and\u00a0212\u00a0assists for 331 career points in 578\u00a0career games. He was originally drafted 24th overall of the 2009 NHL draft by the Caps.<\/p>\n

What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n

Johansson will be UFA at the end of the season and will likely be a rental for his new club. The Devils are having a rough season and a playoff berth is unlikely\u00a0for them this year so they decided to get a return for Johansson instead of possibly losing him in free agency. When Taylor Hall<\/a><\/strong> was out of the lineup for the Devils Johansson saw time on the top line for the Devils.<\/p>\n

With David Pastrnak<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0injured<\/a>, the Bruins were looking to add a talented winger for the stretch run. They also picked up versatile forward\u00a0Charlie Coyle<\/a><\/strong> in an earlier trade<\/a> with Minnesota<\/a>. They will hope that Johansson can find the form that allowed him to put up 24 goals and 58 points in 2016-17 with the Capitals.<\/p>\n
