The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> defensive corps got a size upgrade Monday afternoon when it was announced that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oleksja01-advanced.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamie Oleksiak<\/a><\/strong> had been traded to the Stars from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> for a 4th round pick. Oleksiak was originally drafted 14th overall by the Stars in 2011. He was then traded to the Penguins during the 2017-18 season after splitting time between the NHL and AHL in his first four years in Dallas. At 6&#8217;7&#8243;, Oleksiak is one of the tallest defenders in the NHL and will most likely slot in on the Stars third defensive pairing after it was announced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/methoma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Methot<\/a><\/strong> will undergo season-ending\u00a0knee surgery. A\u00a0team that fixed its defensive problem from recent years. The Stars defense made strides in 2017-18 when they finished the season allowing the 7th\u00a0fewest goals as a team. From 2013 to 2017, they were allowing the 3rd most against under ex-head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/coaches\/ruffli01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lindy Ruff<\/a>. Dallas has improved again this season, currently allowing the 3rd least. Despite this, the Stars has lacked scoring and still possess a negative\u00a0goal differential.<\/p>\n<p>Oleksiak will not help the Stars need for goals but can provide penalty killing help if the Stars desire. He was buried\u00a0on the depth chart in Pittsburgh and saw limited time on all special teams play.\u00a0 The 26-year-old has averaged 15:52 minutes of ice time per game, in 26 games and has 11 points.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/honkaju01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julius Honka<\/a><\/strong> finds more playing time as the third right-handed\u00a0shot defenseman, Dallas&#8217; defense will now only have one regular starter over the age of 26.<\/p>\n<h3>Last Word<\/h3>\n<p>If the Stars are attempting to gear up for a playoff run, this most likely will not be their last move before the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/01\/26\/nhl-trade-rumours-dallas-stars-detroit-red-wings-montreal-canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 25th trade deadline<\/a>. Dallas&#8217; depth scoring has been abysmal this season and ranks 3rd worst in the NHL in goals for. They&#8217;ve already <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/01\/14\/anaheim-ducks-devin-shore-dallas-stars-andrew-cogliano\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made one move<\/a> for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coglian01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Cogliano<\/a><\/strong> and could look be looking for another right winger to jump start\u00a0some second-line scoring.
