He didn’t return to the game after blocking that shot.

So far this season, Doughty has scored two goals and 15 assists for 17 points to go along with 14 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.9 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of +1.3.

Doughty has spent his entire 11-year NHL career with the Kings. He has 104 goals and 335 assists for 439 career points in 801 career NHL games. Doughty was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, second overall, in the 2008 NHL draft. He won the 2015-16 Norris Trophy.

Phaneuf Also Injured

It is not clear when Phaneuf was injured in last night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres but he was not on the bench when the third period began. Phaneuf has just one assist in 32 games this season. His possession numbers are 47.8 percent Corsi-For with a relative Corsi of -3.0.

Phaneuf has spent time with Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Kings over his 14-year NHL career. He has scored 136 goals and 353 assists for 489 points in 1013 career NHL games.

What This Means for the Future

This is a huge loss for the Kings as Doughty is their top defensemen. Doughty is not only an asset for them offensively but is a key shot blocker for the Kings. Over the past two seasons, Doughty has tallied up at least 100 blocked shots and 100 hits. So far this Season Doughty has put up nine of his 15 points on the man advantage. Jake Muzzin would the likely candidate to take on even more minutes in his absence.

The Kings are already missing Alec Martinez who is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
