Hextall then joined the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant general manager and vice-president and helped lead the Kings to their Stanley Cup Championship in 2012. He then returned to where it all started for him in 2013 accepting an upper-management position with the Philadelphia Flyers organization.

In 608 career NHL games, Hextall went 296-214-69 with a 2.98 goals-against-average and .998 save percentage. He also recorded a goal and 28 assists. Those 28 assists are eighth most by an NHL goaltender.

What This Means for the Team’s Future

Hextall was hired by the Flyers in 2013 by president Paul Holmgren and was promoted to general manager a year later in 2014. The Flyers have gone 165-158-70 and haven’t made it past the first round in the playoffs while Hextall was running the team. The Flyers biggest problem in past years is the fact that they have struggled to find a solid goaltender to fill their net. Currently, the Flyers have both Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth on injured reserve.

Some of the brighter moves Hextall has made as general manager included drafting Nolan Patrick second overall in the 2017 NHL draft. In 93 career games, Patrick has scored 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points.

The Flyers have not named a replacement for Hextall and will begin the search for a new general manager immediately. Their new general manager will be tasked with deciding what to do with pending unrestricted free agent Wayne Simmonds and working on finding a new goalie or re-signing one as four of the five Flyers goalies who are set to become free agents at the end of the season.

Main Photo: PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 27: Ron Hextall, General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers (C), looks on prior the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft at the Wells Fargo Center on June 27, 2014, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
