First-round picks of 2016 and 2017 respectively, Jesse Puljujarvi and Kailer Yamamoto will look to find their game in the minors. Both were expected to finally break out as suitable right wingers for Connor McDavid. However, after the first month of the season, that hasn’t happened. Puljujarvi recorded an abysmal single goal in 11 games for the Oilers. Yamamoto matched that and added an assist for two points in 12 games. For the foreseeable future, coach Todd McLellan will roll with Drake Caggiula, Alex Chiasson, and Ty Rattie on the right wing.

Jesse Puljujarvi

Puljujarvi is no stranger to Bakersfield. Over the past two seasons, the 20-year-old has spent 49 games with the Condors. While honing his game in the minors since coming to North America, he’s racked up 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points across that span. A good sign for Oiler fans, Puljujarvi is expected to get top minutes in the AHL.

The former fourth overall pick of 2016 is drawing many speculations. It’s still too early to call him a bust regardless of his lackluster play in the NHL. That being said, his window for being the elite winger Edmonton saw him as is quickly closing. Rather than further stunt his development by keeping him in the bottom six or the press box, playing in Bakersfield should be beneficial. Once Edmonton sees a revival in confidence and production, he will have another chance to stay with the Oilers.

Kailer Yamamoto

Yamamoto, on the other hand, will make his AHL debut this week. Last year’s 22nd overall pick dominated in the WHL for his hometown team, Spokane Chiefs. Despite getting a chance on the top line, he still couldn’t maintain a spot on the Oilers roster. Much like Puljujarvi, it’s a given that he too will see top minutes with the Condors.

The 20-year-old joins his fellow prospects in Bakersfield looking to continue developing into the elite winger that he can be. Yamamoto’s timeframe to come into his own is much less pressing than Puljujarvi’s. However, much like the aforementioned player, Yamamoto should develop confidence and skill in the “A”. In fact, alongside Tyler Benson and Cameron Hebig they now have a stacked top six and could make a serious run for the Calder Cup.

Cooper Marody Called Up

The Oilers made another move on Sunday morning as they called up forward Cooper Marody. Marody had appeared in two games with the Oilers previously. He registered four shots on net and averaged 8:52 ice time while appearing on the team’s fourth line alongside Ryan Strome and Milan Lucic.

With the Condors, Marody has three goals and seven assists in seven games.
