The team lost two more players in Saturday\u2019s bout with the <\/span><b>Montreal Canadiens <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bringing their injured-reserve count to six. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Red Wings Injuries Pile Up in November<\/b><\/h1>\n<h2><b>FORWARDS<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanekth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Vanek<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started in late-October when team-leading goal scorer <\/span><b>Thomas Vanek<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a hip injury. Through the first seven games of the season with Vanek in the lineup, the team was scoring at an average rate of 3.4 goals per game played. Through the eleven games they played without him, the team scored at an average rate of 1.6 goals per game played. The Vanek injury was a tough pill to swallow. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/athanan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreas Athanasiou<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, as if the Red Wings could afford to lose more energy, youngster <\/span><b>Andreas Athanasiou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fell to a sprained knee during the first period of a game against the <\/span><b>Vancouver Canucks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Athanasiou, who just barely made the team this year, was wowing fans with his undying speed and highlight reel goals. This is one of those injuries that\u2019s really tough on the player. It took him so long to crack the lineup and he was playing so well, earning himself an average of twelve minutes of ice time per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The silver lining in the Athanasiou injury is that <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/manthan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Mantha<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was called up to fill the spot. Mantha started the season in Grand Rapids, despite having a strong enough pre-season to make the team. He\u2019s since played seven games with the Red Wings and put up four points. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helmda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darren Helm<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Darren Helm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was then removed in the third period of the Red Wings\u2019 November 15th game against the <\/span><b>Tampa Bay Lightning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He suffered a shoulder dislocation after being upended by <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nesteni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Nesterov<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and would miss six weeks. Helm has a history of injuries. In 2012-13, he missed 81 games due to a back injury. He also missed half of the 2013-14 season. For the last two years, he\u2019s finally been putting in full seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placing Helm on the injured-reserve prompted the team to call up <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertuty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Bertuzzi<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Grand Rapids to take the spot in the lineup, but it didn\u2019t take long for him to go down either.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tyler Bertuzzi<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bertuzzi\u2019s injury came in the second period of the Red Wings 2-1 overtime loss to the C<\/span>anadiens<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Saturday night. He was checked into the boards by <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/emelial01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexei Emelin<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and couldn\u2019t back get up. His left knee buckled and he needed to be carried off the ice. This is not a good sign for a young player who was showing a lot of potential in his call-up games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the injury didn\u2019t appear to be as bad as it looked. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RedWings?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#RedWings<\/a> Tyler Bertuzzi said left ankle injury not as bad as it looked. The young defensemen entered his sophomore season as a regular on the blueline paired mostly with <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ericsjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Ericsson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marchenko went out in the Wings\u2019 November 20th game against the <\/span><b>Calgary Flames<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He took a hit from <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferlami01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micheal Ferland<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0midway through the second period and didn\u2019t return to the game. His injury is classified as \u201cupper-body\u201d and he\u2019s only supposed to miss a couple of weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, he\u2019s had an okay start. It\u2019s no where near how good the team wants or needs him to be, but it\u2019s also not bad enough for him to be replaced by one of the young healthy scratches. Despite this, it still hurts to lose defensemen on a team that struggles so much defensively. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithbr05.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Smith<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Brendan Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sat out two games as a healthy scratch this month. When Marchenko went down, Smith drew back into the lineup. He only got to play in two games &#8211; both wins for the Red Wings &#8211; before falling to injury himself. It came during Saturday\u2019s game against the Canadiens. Smith went knee-to-knee <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/danauph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillip Danault<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and had to be helped off the ice. He will not require surgery, but he\u2019s expected to miss four weeks. This should give <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ouellxa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier Ouellet<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a chance to play a little more regularly, and he looked quite impressive Saturday night defensively. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>GOALIES<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howarja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Howard<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In perhaps the biggest blow yet, <\/span><b>Jimmy Howard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was injured in Friday night\u2019s contest against the <\/span><b>New Jersey Devils<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Howard has been the Red Wings superstar this year, posting a .940 save percentage and 1.88 goals against average through twelve games. The save percentage ranks fourth among goalies who have played in eight games or more. It\u2019s exactly what a team who ranks 22nd in Goals For needs: a hot goalie to keep them in it. They may not have been getting all the wins, but Howard has been keeping them in games to at least give them a shot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howard is only expected to miss about a week and it\u2019s widely believed that he\u2019s nursing a groin injury, though it\u2019s only been classified as \u201clower-body\u201d. Howard has tweaked his groin more than once, which has caused him to miss long stretches of the season in the past. Coach <\/span><b>Jeff Blashill<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/redwings\/news\/red-wings-overcome-deficits-and-loss-of-howard\/c-284093366\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems to feel confident that this is not the case this time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Up and Coming<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Howard out, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mrazepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petr Mrazek<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes the reigns in net. Mrazek has been off to a slow start this year, posting a .898 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average through thirteen games played. These are not the numbers you want to see for a goalie who has put up elite numbers in the past. This opportunity may be just what Mrazek needs to get back on track. He\u2019ll be backed up by recent call-up <\/span><b>Jared Coreau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who\u2019s been leading the <\/span><b>Grand Rapids Griffins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to an 8-5-0 record through thirteen games played. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most interesting return will be <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jurcoto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomas Jurco<\/a>\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With Bertuzzi\u2019s exit, Jurco\u2019s conditioning stint in Grand Rapids will be cut short. Jurco underwent surgery on his back during the offseason and is finally ready to rejoin the team. In the past, he\u2019s suffered from a lack of confidence due to constant shuffling of the lines and an inability to grasp his role on the team. He\u2019s expected to make his season debut on Tuesday against the <\/span><b>Dallas Stars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Vanek has been back for four games and has already recorded an even strength assist. <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nyquigu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gustav Nyquist<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to benefit the most from having him back in the lineup as their established chemistry has picked up right where it left off.
