He blocked a pair of shots in quick succession in the first period.<\/p>\n<p>van Riemsdyk handed out an assist in the season-opening win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a>. He was also called for a minor penalty during that game. van Riemsdyk totaled 13:59 of ice time in that game. His possession numbers were 56.7 percent Corsi\u00a0and a relative Corsi of 10.5.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old has played for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto Maple Leafs during his 10-year NHL career. He has put up 201 goals and 193 assists for 394 career points in 611 career games. The Philadelphia Flyers originally drafted in the first round, second overall of the 2007 NHL draft.<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p>van Riemsdyk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/philadelphia\/flyers\/james-van-riemsdyk-exits-flyers-2nd-game-season-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was the biggest signing<\/a> of Flyers&#8217; general manager&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Hextall<\/a>&#8216;s tenure in charge. He signed a five-year, $35 million deal in the off-season to return to Philadelphia after six years in Toronto.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n<p>The loss of &#8220;JVR&#8221; will severely test the team&#8217;s depth. He was on the third line with rookie centre <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vorobmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikhail Vorobyev<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmowa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Simmonds<\/a><\/strong>. That third line boasted a pair of former 30-goal scorers, but someone else will have to step into the lineup.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/weiseda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Weise<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courierpostonline.com\/story\/sports\/nhl\/flyers\/2018\/10\/07\/flyers-have-options-if-james-van-riemsdyk-knee-injury-keeps-him-out\/1559608002\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">could move into the lineup<\/a> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rafflmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Raffl<\/a> <\/strong>would take van Riemsdyk&#8217;s spot on the third line. Prospect <strong>Carsen Twarynski <\/strong>might get a shot at making the big club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicolas Aube-Kubel<\/strong>&#8216;s two-goal performance for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL season-opener over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will also get him consideration.
