Today the series continues with the Metropolitan Division.<\/i><\/p>\n<h1>2018-19 Metropolitan Division Preview<\/h1>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>LWOH Managing Editor, Daniel Brown writes:<\/p>\n<p>In the always tough Metropolitan division, the Washington Capitals were never good enough. That all changed last year. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong> finally guided his team to the Stanley Cup Final and won. In large part, the team that won the cup remains fairly intact for another run. Veterans <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backsni02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicklas Backstrom<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlsjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Carlson<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oshietj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Oshie<\/a><\/strong>, Ovechkin, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuzneev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeny Kuznetsov<\/a><\/strong> return this season. In addition to those players, goalie\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/holtbbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Braden Holtby<\/a><\/strong> returns to mind the net. Many fans were left confused by the departure of\u00a0<strong>Barry Trotz. <\/strong>The Caps let him\u00a0walk to the Metro rival New York Islanders and replaced him with the top assistant <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/reirdto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Reirden<\/a><\/strong>. The Caps also checked another off the tick list this offseason. Filling the need for a physical winger with a $31.02 million six-year deal with RFA <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsoto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Wilson<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Wilson, 24, known for his physical presence is felt to just be entering the prime of his career. Is there enough in the tank for aging defensemen <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orpikbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooks Orpik<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 37, and fellow blueliner <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/niskama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Niskanen<\/a>, <\/strong>31 to keep opponents honest. The Capitals seem to think so but have an uphill battle to repeat as champs.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Hunter Hodies writes:<\/p>\n<p>The Penguins come into this season being well-rested after coming up short of a three-peat this past season. It\u2019s the longest summer they\u2019ve had since 2015. That can only mean bad news for the rest of the league as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesseph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Kessel<\/a><\/strong> makes this team a Stanley Cup contender. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/letankr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kris Letang<\/a><\/strong> has the ability to bounce back after a very tough season coming off neck surgery. He had a full offseason to train which should pay huge dividends. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrama02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Murray<\/a><\/strong> will also look to have a great season as he not only went through injuries last season, but his father passed away unexpectedly. They did sign <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Johnson<\/a><\/strong> during the off-season, which could turn out to be a big mistake, but rest assured, this team will be gunning for their third Stanley Cup in four seasons.<\/p>\n<h3>Philadelphia Flyers<\/h3>\n<p>Hunter Hodies writes:<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia was able to qualify for the playoffs last season after missing the year before. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/giroucl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude Giroux<\/a><\/strong> had the best season of his career as he hit 100 points for the time. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coutuse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Couturier<\/a><\/strong> also had his best season offensively as he had 76 points while also continually being a Selke trophy candidate. This season, they\u2019ll likely be a playoff team again. Especially after signing James Van Riemsdyk to a long-term deal this offseason. He should be good for at least 20 goals next year as the Flyers wanted to improve their scoring. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/provoiv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ivan Provorov<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gostish01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shayne Gostisbehere<\/a><\/strong> continue to be outstanding on the Flyers blue line and there\u2019s more help on the way in that department. In goal, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/elliobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Elliott<\/a><\/strong> will have to be much better than he was not just in the regular season, but also the playoffs.<\/p>\n<h3>Carolina Hurricanes<\/h3>\n<p>Hunter Hodies writes:<\/p>\n<p>Stop me if you\u2019ve heard this before, but Carolina has a chance to be a playoff team this year. It seems like we\u2019ve been saying this every year. That said, they haven\u2019t been able to make it. Trading for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamildo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dougie Hamilton<\/a> <\/strong>will go a long way to ensure that they qualify for the first time since 2009. He\u2019s one of the best defensemen in the league and can eat top pairing minutes each night. Added to an already strong defense core, the Hurricanes quietly have one of the NHL&#8217;s best bluelines. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/slavija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaccob Slavin<\/a><\/strong> might be the league&#8217;s most underrated defenseman. The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/skinnje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Skinner<\/a><\/strong> trade didn\u2019t get that much of a return, but they still have players such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ahose01,ahose02&amp;search=Sebastian+Aho&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sebastian Aho<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staaljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Staal<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/williju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Williams<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/teravte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teuvo Teravainen<\/a><\/strong> to make up for it. As usual, goaltending will make or break this team. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/darlisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Darling<\/a><\/strong> is going to have to be much better than his sub .900 save percentage from last season if this team wants to make the playoffs.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Andrew Allison writes:<\/p>\n<p>The Columbus Blue Jackets lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year. After taking the first two games on the road they would go on to lose to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals. This season the Blue Jackets are looking to get back to the postseason for the third consecutive season. Behind the goaltending of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bobrose01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Bobrovsky<\/a><\/strong> and the elite scoring ability of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a><\/strong> (for however long that might be), the Blue Jackets should be able to reach that goal. The Blue Jackets are still young and have a good core. Pair that with a strong defense the Blue Jackets can compete with anyone. The one thing that Columbus needs is another elite scorer. That could be <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/atkinca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Atkinson<\/a><\/strong> getting back to that level or a player like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bjorkol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Bjorkstrand<\/a><\/strong> having a breakout season. If the Blue Jackets get that scorer they could finally make it past the first round.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Johanna Albertson writes:<\/p>\n<p>The New York Rangers, a tragedy of last season, will certainly bring a bit more to the table in 2018-19. However, the majority of their roster is young and without the NHL experience, most of the Metro Division\u2019s teams have. Don\u2019t count out <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lundqhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Lundqvist<\/a><\/b> who, despite a less than stellar performance last season, is still one of the most elite goaltenders in the NHL. Lundqvist will once again prove essential in keeping the Rangers in the running for any sort of playoff spot. The return of a healthier, faster <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kreidch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Kreider<\/a><\/b> will effectively reunite the KZB line. It helps head coach <b>David Quinn <\/b>will likely let <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/buchnpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Buchnevich<\/a><\/b> get his fair share of top-line play. The top defensive pairing of <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/skjeibr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brady Skjei<\/a><\/b> and <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shattke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Shattenkirk<\/a><\/b> will provide a more trustworthy ddefensethan the Rangers have experienced in several years. However, there\u2019s no questioning that the inexperience on the Rangers will be a liability. No playoffs for the Rangers this year, but they\u2019re on their way to something special.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Johanna Albertson writes:<\/p>\n<p>The New Jersey Devils were massively silent this off-season, especially for a team that was ousted so quickly in the playoffs. The only explanation is that the Devils are confident in their internal talent. They look to raise the bar in the upcoming season.<b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hallta02,hallta01&amp;search=Taylor+Hall&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Taylor Hall<\/a><\/b> had an outstanding 93 point season last year. The rest of their offence, however, is far behind. <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hischni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nico Hischier<\/a><\/b>, the rookie, was the second-leading scorer with a full 41 points less than Hall. Unfortunately for the Devils, they can\u2019t rely on Hall to always deliver that same firepower. Additionally, with goaltender <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schneco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cory Schneider<\/a><\/b> potentially still out to start the season after hip surgery, between the pipes remains a big question mark. The Devils should have been more active in the free agent market to bolster their roster and add secondary scoring. They\u2019ll miss the postseason and not make the same mistake in 2019-2020.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Johanna Albertson writes:<\/p>\n<p>It has been nothing short of a shocking summer for the New York Islanders. The Islanders finished a whopping 17 points out of the playoffs last year, missing them for a second straight season. <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tavarjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Tavares<\/a><\/b> said goodbye to the Island and signed a large contract with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. However, with the addition of reigning Stanley Cup-winning coach Barry Trotz and three-time Stanley Cup winner <strong>Lou Lamoriello<\/strong>, the Islanders are putting on some stunning optics in the resume department. However, what\u2019s great on paper is not always great in practice. This team is under construction and might be better in a few years. For now, resting on the laurels of <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leean01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anders Lee<\/a><\/b>\u2019s 40-goal season and <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barzama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mathew Barzal<\/a><\/b>\u2019s massive success will just not be enough to propel the team ahead in the massively competitive Metro Division. Their porous goaltending in <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greisth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Greiss<\/a><\/b>, which made them league-worst with 293 goals against in 2017-18, will not see much improvement with a shaky <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lehnero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robin Lehner<\/a><\/b> in the mix.
