We will be following the order of the first round of the NHL draft (as if there were no traded draft picks) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018-top-shelf-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can find all the articles here<\/a>.\u00a0 Since we had an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonhockeyprospects.com\/2017-nhl-entry-draft-headquarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extensive NHL Draft preview<\/a>, we will not be reviewing the players who were drafted in the 2018 draft, as there have been no games since then, and our reports on them will not have changed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13542 td-animation-stack-type0-2 td-animation-stack-type0-1\" src=\"http:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/07\/Top-Shelf-Prospects.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"107\"><em>What we will be doing is linking you to those articles, as well as taking a look at prospects that were acquired before this year\u2019s draft;<\/em> their progress, and their chances of making the 2018-19 roster of the NHL team in question. We will also bring you one sleeper pick \u2013 a player who was either drafted in the 4th-round or later, or was an undrafted free agent signing who we pick as our dark horse to make the NHL. For those wondering, the cut-off for what is or isn\u2019t a prospect is typically about 50 NHL games played (including playoff games) or is 25 years old. These are not hard or fast rules though, and we may make some exceptions depending on the circumstances.<\/p>\n<h1>2018 NHL Organizational Prospect Rankings (31-21)<\/h1>\n<p>After going through the top 10 prospects of every team in the NHL and giving full scouting reports, we will now be ranking each team&#8217;s prospect pools.<\/p>\n<p>Note: If you click on the team name, you will get a link to a full prospect report on that team. \u00a0The snippets here are just a taste of the information available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>31.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/09\/san-jose-sharks-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">San Jose Sharks<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The Sharks do not have a single prospect that can be called a true blue-chip talent. Their top two prospects, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/14\/ryan-merkley-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Ryan Merkley<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0<strong>Rudolfs\u00a0Balcers<\/strong> clearly have talent, however, they also come with huge question marks. For Merkley, his attitude, commitment in his own end of the ice, and dedication to the game are big issues. For Balcers, he needs to maintain a consistent effort level every night and in all three phases of the game. <strong>Mario Ferraro <\/strong>and <strong>Josh Norris<\/strong>, are developing in college, but their upsides seem limited to second pairing defence and middle six centre respectively. There are other middle-six forwards in the system, but little to speak of on the blueline, and nothing to speak of in terms of goaltending prospects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>30.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/20\/tsp-top-washington-capitals-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Capitals have an elite goalie prospect in <strong>Ilya Samsonov<\/strong>. He is their only true blue-chip talent. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/24\/alexander-alexeyev-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Alexander Alexeyev<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Lucas Johansen<\/strong>, <strong>Connor Hobbs<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jonas Siegenthaler<\/strong> provide depth on the blue line, but there does not seem to be a top-pair player in the bunch. <strong>Axel Johnsson Fjallby<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barberi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Riley Barber<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Garrett Pilon<\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gersish01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shane Gersich<\/a><\/strong> are the team&#8217;s best hopes at forward, but they all project as third and fourth line forwards. Drafting at the bottom of the first round year in and year out has taken a toll on the system, but as the Capitals continue to celebrate their Stanley Cup victory the price to be paid for that victory is more than worth it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>29.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/10\/pittsburgh-penguins-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Like the Capitals, the Penguins pay the price of success. Being perennial contenders along with Stanley Cup wins in 2016 and 2017 will hurt a team&#8217;s farm system. The Penguins top prospect, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spronda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sprong<\/a><\/strong>, is ready to make an NHL impact. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/astonza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Aston-Reese<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/simondo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominik Simon<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarrytr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tristan Jarry<\/a><\/strong> have all contributed at the NHL level, but remain prospects by our criteria. <strong>Jordy Bellerive<\/strong>, an undrafted prospect whom the Penguins signed last year in training camp is looking like a steal while <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/05\/15\/filip-hallander-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Filip Hallander<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/28\/calen-addison-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Calen Addison<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0were solid picks in the 2018 Draft. The Penguins system improved over our last rankings, but there is a long way to go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>28.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/06\/columbus-blue-jackets-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the Blue Jackets best young talent is already in the NHL, leaving a system lacking in quality and depth. It shouldn&#8217;t be too big of a concern as the Jackets young players have already turned the franchise into a competitive team and should be part of the organization for a long time. They reached in the first round for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/05\/08\/liam-foudy-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Liam Foudy<\/strong><\/a>, who we graded as mid-second round talent. Top prospect <strong>Vitali Abramov<\/strong> has put up big QMJHL numbers, but his size is a question as he heads to the pro game. On the blue line, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlsga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabriel Carlsson<\/a><\/strong> is close to NHL ready but doesn&#8217;t seem to have much offensive upside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>27.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/07\/29\/edmonton-oilers-prospects-2\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like the Blue Jackets, most of the Oilers best young talent is in the NHL. Picking at 10th overall,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/06\/evan-bouchard-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\">Evan Bouchard<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was just what the doctor ordered for the Oilers. He gives the team a future puck-moving defenceman, who can also play on the power play, and is right-handed. The pick addresses a number of team weaknesses. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yamamka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kailer Yamamoto<\/a><\/strong> is a top-end talent but must overcome a lack of size. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bearet01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ethan Bear<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Caleb Jones<\/strong> are knocking on the door of making the NHL full-time but questions remain as to how high up the depth chart they can climb when they get there. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/19\/ryan-mcleod-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Ryan McLeod<\/strong><\/a> is the team&#8217;s best centre prospect while\u00a0<strong>Kirill Maksimov <\/strong>and <strong>Tyler Benson\u00a0<\/strong>are depth on the wings. Goaltender <strong>Stuart Skinner<\/strong> just finished his time in the WHL and is a few years away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>26.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/05\/new-jersey-devils-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Devils surprising 2017-18 season was built on their youth. The system graduated five players, including first overall pick <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hischni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nico Hischier<\/a><\/strong>. That puts a dent in any prospect pool. 2018 first-rounder <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/04\/ty-smith-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Ty Smith<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was a steal for the Devils. His development is of massive importance as the Devils really lack defensive prospects. Their best forward prospect, <strong>Michael McLeod<\/strong>, stagnated a bit due to injury this year. There are questions if he has the offensive game to be a true top-six centre in the NHL. Forwards\u00a0<strong>Jesper Boqvist<\/strong> and <strong>Joey Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0had solid seasons and improved their stock as prospects. Meanwhile, the future of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quennjo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Quenneville<\/a><\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/pucksandpitchforks.com\/2018\/01\/21\/new-jersey-devils-john-quenneville-running-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">been questioned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>25.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/07\/31\/calgary-flames-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Calgary Flames<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>If these rankings were done prior to the 2018 NHL Draft, the Flames would have rated a lot better. They didn&#8217;t have a pick in the first three rounds, as other teams added quality talent. They also <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/06\/23\/carolina-hurricanes-and-calgary-flames-blockbuster-trade-noah-hanifin-elias-lindholm-dougie-hamilton\/\" target=\"_self\">traded<\/a> <strong>Adam Fox<\/strong>, who would have been one of their top prospects, to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina<\/a>. There are quality defenders still in the system. Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Juuso Valimaki<\/strong> had a strong season for Tri-City and moves to the AHL. Swedes\u00a0<strong>Rasmus Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kylinol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Kylington<\/a><\/strong> appear close to NHL ready. The team is set in goal with <strong>Tyler Parsons<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gillijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jon Gillies<\/a><\/strong>. Forward contains depth but a lot of question marks. Team Canada&#8217;s World Junior captain\u00a0<strong>Dillon Dube <\/strong>is the best of the bunch. Can he score at the pro level? Or is he a bottom-six forward?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>24.) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/15\/nashville-predators-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Nashville Predators<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>2017 First-Round pick <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tolvaee01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eeli Tolvanen<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is one of the best prospects in hockey. He was an absolute steal for Nashville, as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockeyprospects.com\/2017\/06\/25\/2017-nhl-draft-grades-part-three\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we predicted one year ago<\/a>. <strong>Dante Fabbro<\/strong> looks like a solid defender in college. So, how did the Predators fall from a top-five prospect pool in last year&#8217;s rankings into the bottom-10? A number of trades stripped the system. They gave up four of last year&#8217;s top 10 prospects in moves last year. Meanwhile, top goalie prospect <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sarosju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juuse Saros<\/a><\/strong> is now considered graduated. They also stripped the system of 2018 picks, leading to one of our worst draft grades.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at what is left, <strong>Emil Pettersson<\/strong> and <strong>Yakov Trenin<\/strong>\u00a0should push for forward spots in training camp; while <strong>Patrick Harper<\/strong> and <strong>Grant Mismash\u00a0<\/strong>continue to develop in college. The Nashville blueline is too deep for any of their prospects to crack this year. In the AHL,\u00a0<strong>Frederic Allard<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carrial01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandre Carrier<\/a><\/strong> are two to watch going forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>23.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/13\/tsp-top-toronto-maple-leafs-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Like the Oilers and Blue Jackets, the Leafs have graduated a lot of talent in recent years. This has weakened the prospect group. 2017 draftee\u00a0<strong>Timothy Liljegren<\/strong>\u00a0remains the team&#8217;s top prospect. They have high hopes for the right-handed defenceman. Youngster\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dermotr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Dermott<\/a><\/strong> contributed down the stretch and should be a full-time Leaf this year. The Leafs further addressed the defence with their first two picks being <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/23\/rasmus-sandin-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Rasmus Sandin<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/05\/25\/sean-durzi-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft-59\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Sean Durzi<\/strong><\/a>. When they eventually reach the NHL, it should improve the team&#8217;s biggest weakness. Upfront, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreas Johnsson<\/a><\/strong> looks like an NHLer this year. Wingers\u00a0<strong>Carl Grundstrom<\/strong>, <strong>Jeremy Bracco<\/strong>,\u00a0and <strong>Yegor Korshkov<\/strong> need more development. The team is weak at centre though.\u00a0<strong>Joseph Woll<\/strong> is the Leafs top hope in goal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>22.) <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/08\/11\/anaheim-ducks-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Anaheim Ducks<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Ducks top prospect <strong>Sam Steel<\/strong> had another solid WHL season\u00a0and moves up to the pros this year. He is joined by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/terrytr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Terry<\/a><\/strong> who leaves Denver University. The two forwards could push for spots in training camp. <strong>Maxime Comtois<\/strong> and <strong>Antoine Morand<\/strong> head back to the QMJHL for another year.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/13\/isac-lundestrom-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft-17\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Isac Lundestrom<\/strong><\/a> was a solid pick in the draft. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Max Jones<\/strong>\u00a0had a disappointing OHL campaign and will look to improve as he heads to the AHL. On the blueline, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pettema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Pettersson<\/a><\/strong> is already making his presence felt. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Larsson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Josh Mahura<\/strong> are good prospects who need AHL time.\u00a0This draft was not deep for goalies but the Ducks grabbed one of our top-ranked goalies in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/06\/18\/2018-nhl-draft-scouting-reports-81-90\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Lukas Dostal<\/strong><\/a>. They also have <strong>Olle Eriksson Ek<\/strong> in the system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>21.)\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/08\/03\/dallas-stars-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In <strong>Miro Heiskanen<\/strong>, the Stars have one of the top defensive prospects in the world. Last year&#8217;s third overall pick had another strong season. They took <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/30\/ty-dellandrea-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Ty Dellandrea<\/strong><\/a> with the 13th overall pick this year. It seems a little high for Flint centre, but with the added value of centres in the NHL, the pick could work out. <strong>Jason Robertson<\/strong> had a great year in Kingston and Dallas management will likely put him back in the OHL next year. The Stars are set in goal with <strong>Colton Point<\/strong> and <strong>Jake Oettinger<\/strong> as high-end prospects.
