The Flames placed their former assistant captain on unconditional waivers today. The Flames intend to buy out the remaining two years of his contract. The move will save the Flames $3 million in cap salary space in each of the two years remaining on his contract.

Brouwer Placed On Unconditional Waivers

Brouwer is two years into an $18 million four year contract with the Flames. He signed that contract as a free agent. Despite the assistant captain role, Brouwer has produced very little in terms of expected offense since joining the Flames. He joined the team in free agency after playing for the St. Louis Blues for the 2015-16 season. His numbers for Calgary for have been pedestrian. With 19 goals and 47 points in 150 games. The 32-year-old Brouwer is coming off a career-worst year with 6 goals and 22 points in 76 games.

Brouwer was a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and also played several seasons with the Washington Capitals. His production for the Blackhawks made him a valuable asset as that team in the years leading up to and including their Stanley Cup win.

Calgary Continue to Make Moves This Offseason

With the waiving of Brouwer, the Flames continue to move and shake up their offseason roster in an effort to build a playoff ready team. The team showed promise last season before a late fall in the standings caused the team to miss out on a playoff spot.

This move continues the Flames offseason strategy of offloading players and contracts to bring in solid performers via free agency and trades. This offseason the Flames brought in James Neal as a free agent after his successful season with the Vegas Golden Knights. They also traded Dougie Hamilton to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Noah Hanifin and forward Elias Lindholm.

The Flames earned this second buyout after wrapping up their arbitration cases.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Calgary Flames waive Troy Brouwer.
