During his time in Boston, Middleton, nicknamed &#8220;Nifty&#8221;,\u00a0finished with 402 goals and 496 assists in 881 games. The Toronto native wore the captain\u2019s &#8216;C&#8217; alongside <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bourqra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Bourque<\/a><\/strong> following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oreilte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Terry O&#8217;Reilly<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Middleton was drafted in 1973 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> and traded to Boston three years later in a deal for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hodgeke01,hodgeke02&amp;search=Ken+Hodge&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Hodge<\/a><\/strong>. Boston received a much younger and speedier player in Middleton, who would lead the team with Bourque, who&#8217;s number 77 is also retired by the Bruins. Middleton&#8217;s highest-scoring season came in 1981, when he notched 51 goals. He also won the Lady Byng trophy for that season as the player who displayed the most sportsmanship while playing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It hit me like a sledgehammer. He still holds the title of most points in one playoff series with 19 &#8211; one more point than <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong>. He also holds the record for most assists in a playoff series with 14.<\/p>\n<h2>Retirement<\/h2>\n<p>Middleton&#8217;s career in the NHL was cut short after receiving a blow to the head from a puck in a Bruins practice. He would skate again in a Bruins uniform, but suffered from frequent headaches that caused him to retire.<\/p>\n<p>The Bruins will be playing the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> on the day that number 16 will be immortalized in the Bruins franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Middleton will be the 12th number to be retired by the Boston Bruins.
