The Senators receive Ryan Callahan and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in exchange for Mike Condon and a sixth-round pick in the upcoming draft.

Key Players

In Callahan, the Senators receive a veteran forward who used to have a knack for finding the back of the net. However, with declining production and two years left on his contract at $5.8 million AAV, he is a salary cap dump for the Lightning.

Callahan also brings playoff experience to Ottawa. Last season, Callahan scored five goals and 13 assists for 18 points in 67 games. He also added 29 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.7 percent Corsi-For with a relative Corsi of -0.2. These totals are better than his 2016-17 numbers where he only scored two goals and two assists for 4 points in 18 games.

Over his 12-year NHL career, Callahan has played for the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning. He has scored 179 career goals and 190 career assists for 369 points in 705 career games. Callahan has added 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points in 119 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was originally drafted in the fourth round, 127th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers.

Condon went 0-2 in two starts last season and a 6.38 goals against average. He has a 45-58-17 record in 129 games and has six career shutouts. He’s played for the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators in his four-year NHL career.

What This Means for the Future

In his last three seasons with the Lightning, Callahan has struggled offensively. He has put up just 17 goals in his last 158 games. Hopefully, for Callahan, a new team will re-ignite the offensive abilities he was able to show in the better part of his career for the Rangers. Callahan still has the ability to play on a team’s bottom six next year. Make no mistake though, this deal is about getting his contract off the Lightning’s books.

Condon will likely be part of the goaltending rotation for the Syracuse Crunch, who are Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:’LmkKbH6QRNxYHIt1lwcI_g’,sig:’N8l-vH0k_8XHOw1OkiuonlXja8OXq4P7FROknZbvF1w=’,w:’594px’,h:’397px’,items:’963190378′,caption: true ,tld:’ca’,is360: false })});

The Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to trade forward Ryan Callahan and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for goaltender Mike Condon and a sixth-round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft.
