Sheahan became an unrestricted free agent after the season when he was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Penguins\u00a0in June.<\/p>\n<p>He started out centering the Penguins third line after he was acquired but moved to the fourth line after the Penguins acquired <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brassde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derick Brassard<\/a><\/strong> at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward Riley Sheahan to a one-year contract. Beyond <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a><\/strong>, they had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mckeggr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Greg McKegg<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rowneca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carter Rowney<\/a><\/strong> as their other centers. They had to get an upgrade anyway they could and it is exactly what they did. They gave up forward <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsosc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Wilson<\/a><\/strong> to get him as he wasn&#8217;t playing much.<\/p>\n<p>Sheahan had a good bounce-back season after he only had two goals the previous season with Detroit. This past season, he had 11 goals and 32 points in 73 games for Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Sheahan will continue to help the Penguins on the penalty kill. He was one of the first forwards over the boards whenever Pittsburgh had to kill a penalty. For the next few years, he&#8217;ll bring that to the lineup as well as some more depth scoring as he&#8217;ll look to build off the 32 point season he had.
