He also had seven shutouts setting a new Spitfire record. DiPietro was originally drafted in the third round, 64th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Canucks. He was named OHL Goaltender of the Year and played for Team Canada during the IIHF World Championships. DiPietro did not see any action during the World Championships.

Ben Kerr had this to say in his scouting report of DiPietro

“DiPietro is calm and composed in net. There have been times this year when Windsor has dominated the play, and he has not seen many shots. Despite that, he maintains good focus and is ready for the next shot. There have also been times when Windsor had a mish-mash lineup due to injuries, and he faced a lot of shots and odd-man rushes against. He did not get flustered and maintained his poise in the net,” says the author of Top Shelf Prospects. “Like most young goalies, DiPietro is going to be a long-term project. He will need time to develop and refine the finer points of his game. The talent and potential to be a number one goaltender in the NHL are there. One aspect of his game that really needs work is his puck handling ability.”

Kerr went onto compare DiPietro to New York Islanders‘ netminder Jaroslav Halak.

What This Means for the Future

The 18-year-old joins the young core of goaltenders that the Canucks have. This past year the Canucks had Jacob Markstrom and Anders Nilsson manning the net for the pride of British Columbia. DiPietro will most likely spend a year or two down in the AHL before he is called up to the NHL.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

The Vancouver Canucks have signed goaltender Michael DiPietro to a three-year, entry-level contract.
