The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> have four picks in the first three rounds of the draft. The centre\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">position<\/span>\u00a0is an area that the team may focus on after the first round. There are several good prospects at centre that could help the Blackhawks lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Chicago Blackhawks Draft Targets Part 4 &#8211; Centres<\/h1>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">In the\u00a0earlier\u00a0Draft Targets series, we looked at the Blackhawks options with their first and third round picks. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/05\/05\/blackhawks-future-begins-now\/\" target=\"_self\">In Part 1<\/a>, we focused on potential\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">defensemen<\/span>\u00a0who could be taken with the eighth overall pick. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/04\/06\/evan-bouchard-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Evan Bouchard<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">was featured<\/span>\u00a0as the best defenseman that\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">may be<\/span>\u00a0available when the Blackhawks draft at #8. Improving their D Corps is a must for the Blackhawks this off-season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/05\/13\/chicago-blackhawks-draft-targets-part-two\/\" target=\"_self\">In Part 2 of the Draft Targets series<\/a>, the options for the Blackhawks second first-round draft pick\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">were reviewed<\/span>. The team can use the 27th overall pick to draft another defence prospect, choose a solid winger, or trade the pick. As discussed,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a> do not have a draft pick in the first two rounds this year. As a result, either team\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">may be<\/span>\u00a0willing to deal an NHL ready player in their system to get back into the first round of the draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/05\/19\/chicago-blackhawks-draft-targets-part-three\/\" target=\"_self\">In Part 3 of the series<\/a>, the winger\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">position<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">was reviewed<\/span>. While the Blackhawks have several winger prospects in their system, none of their recent draft picks have set their respective leagues on fire.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/281307\/riley-sutter\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Riley Sutter<\/strong><\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/287341\/nando-eggenberger\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Nando<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Eggenberger<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are great prospects the Blackhawks could target with their two third-round picks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Centre Prospects<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">In this piece, the centre\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">position<\/span>\u00a0is the focus based on insight from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/author\/charles\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Last Word&#8217;s own Ben Kerr.<\/a> Potential centre draft targets\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">will be listed<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">and also<\/span>\u00a0centres recently drafted by the Blackhawks. There are also centres playing for the Rockford Ice Hogs who may be pushing for a spot on the roster in the fall.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Drafting a Centre<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">The Blackhawks have the 69th and 87th picks in the draft. Listed below are centres who\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">may be<\/span>\u00a0available when the Blackhawks are drafting twice in round three. Several of these prospects also have the size that the Blackhawks\u00a0now\u00a0lack up the middle of their roster. The\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">6&#8217;0<\/span>&#8220;187-pound centre had a solid year playing for Penn State University. In 32 games,\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barratt<\/span>\u00a0had 11 goals with 7 assists. As a freshman playing for Penn State,\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barratt<\/span>\u00a0had a good first season. He also brings some grit along with his offensive game. Check this out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barstoolsports.com\/chicago\/blackhawks-prospect-evan-barratt-had-himself-a-night-and-humiliated-minnesota-defenseman\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from Chief at\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barstool<\/span>\u00a0Sports<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">&#8220;Evan\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barratt<\/span>\u00a0looking like a nice player here the past month or so. This is the type of energy and talent the Blackhawks need. They need bullies. Haven\u2019t had a real bully in a while.\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barratt<\/span>\u00a0is a bully and it looks like he can play a bit. Let\u2019s go.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Based on the video links in this piece,\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Barratt<\/span>\u00a0will definitely be a fan favourite playing with an edge like this. The kid is tough, he&#8217;ll be one to follow as he develops for the Blackhawks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Other centres that were recently drafted by the Blackhawks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/183451\/nathan-noel\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nathan\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\"><strong>Noel<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 2016 and <strong>Dylan\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Sikura<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Nick\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Schmaltz<\/span><\/strong>, both in 2014.\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Sikura<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Schmaltz<\/span>\u00a0both played for the Chicago Blackhawks last season and have a bright future ahead of them.\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">Noel<\/span>\u00a0played for the Indy Fuel in the\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USHL<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL where he had one goal in 17 games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Down On The Farm<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">The Rockford Ice Hogs have two young centres on their roster who could be pushing for a spot on the Blackhawks in the fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\"><strong>Luke Johnson<\/strong>\u00a06&#8217;0&#8243; 192 pounds. The Blackhawks drafted Johnson in 2013. The last two seasons Johnson has scored 21 goals and 26 assists in 146 games for the Rockford Ice Hogs. He also has 4 goals and 4 assists in the 12 playoff games this year. Johnson has been getting rave reviews recently for his play in Rockford&#8217;s quest for the Calder Cup. Recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyherald.com\/sports\/20180510\/pesky-center-luke-johnson-helping-rockford-roll-through-playoffs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Dietz of the Daily Herald featured Luke Johnson<\/a> and what makes him a player to watch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">&#8220;Well, offence is just one\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSuggestion\">component<\/span>\u00a0of a centre&#8217;s game. The 6-foot, 192-pound Johnson is tenacious on the penalty kill and plays like an annoying little gnat all over the ice.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">&#8220;I pride myself on being hard to play against,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;I can grow into that shutdown\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">centerman<\/span>\u00a0at the next level, and that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m going to have to do to get there.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Luke Johnson is definitely one to watch as the Ice Hogs continue their incredible 9-3 playoff run against the Texas Stars. Based on his play, he will soon be competing for a spot with the Blackhawks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another centre prospect playing well for the Ice Hogs is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ejdsevi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Victor\u00a0Ejdsell<\/strong><\/a>. The Blackhawks acquired Ejdsell in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hartmry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Hartman<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/02\/26\/ryan-hartman-moving\/\" target=\"_self\">trade with the Nashville Predators<\/a>. The\u00a06&#8217;5&#8243;214-pound centre got in six games with the Blackhawks at the end of the 2017-2018 season. After the season, Ejdsell joined the Ice Hogs playing in 5 regular season games and 12 playoff games. In the playoffs,\u00a0Ejdsell\u00a0has shined, scoring 7 goals and 5 assists for the Hogs.<\/p>\n<h2>Draft Time<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">The Blackhawks have a great opportunity to draft a centre early on in rounds one and three. With four picks in the first 87 players chosen, they\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">should be<\/span>\u00a0able to get a quality prospect to help fill their needs up the middle. Youngsters Luke Johnson and Victor\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Ejdsell<\/span>\u00a0are playing well and will be battling for a spot on the roster in Chicago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Up Next<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Goaltending is a hot topic in Chicago since <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Crawford<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/2018\/01\/16\/chicago-blackhawks-might-lost-corey-crawford-year\/\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"hiddenGrammarError\">was injured<\/span>\u00a0in December<\/a>. There\u00a0are a lot of\u00a0questions about Crawford&#8217;s health and his ability to recover from his injury. The biggest concern is if he can play at the same\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Vezina<\/span>\u00a0level as he was before the injury. Crawford&#8217;s absence this season revealed a lot of the Blackhawks defensive weaknesses. The Blackhawks will need a healthy Crawford to succeed next season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Our next article in the Blackhawks Draft Targets series will address goalies available in the draft.
