Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek dropped a major bomb during the most recent edition<\/a> of the 31 Thoughts Podcast that he co-hosts with Elliotte Freidman. The pair discussed Fortnite, and other popular video games, and the effect that they can have on some young hockey players. Marek relayed a disturbing story about a top NHL prospect.<\/p>\n

Jeff Marek Says That A Top NHL Prospect’s Career in Jeopardy Due to Video Game Addiction<\/h1>\n

\u201cOn video games \u2014 and I\u2019m not going to say the player\u2019s name.\u00a0I really doubt he\u2019s going to make it to the NHL and it\u2019s because of a video-game addiction,\u201d\u00a0Marek stated on Sportsnet\u2019s 31 Thoughts: The Podcast<\/a>, which was released Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the point where his general manager told me \u2014 (his) junior general manager told me \u2014 that they\u2019ve had him go to counselling over it, because he\u2019ll play until all hours of the night and into the morning, and then he\u2019ll have no energy the next day.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be a write-off. And it is that bad. He has this compulsion for playing video games until all hours. I swore \u2026 that I wouldn\u2019t say the player\u2019s name. But it\u2019s unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marek also noted the information is between six months and one-year old. He also said that the player in question is a \u201crecent first-round draft pick for a\u00a0very, very prominent NHL team<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible story because this guy\u2019s a good junior hockey player,\u201d Marek added, talking to colleague Elliotte Friedman. \u201cThis guy\u2019s a good player and was a high (NHL) pick. And I\u2019m probably even saying too much right there, but there\u2019s a good chance he\u2019s not going to make it to the NHL and his (junior) general manager said, \u2018Yeah, video game addiction\u2019s bad. It\u2019s bad with this kid.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Marek has refused to name the actual player, and we will not speculate on who it is in this story. However, we do hope that whoever it is, he gets the help he needs, and is able to overcome his addiction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
