Dubas served as the team&#8217;s assistant general manager since July 22, 2014. He served as an interim general manager from April-July 2015 after <strong>Dave Nonis<\/strong> was fired.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brendan Shanahan, President and Alternate Governor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MapleLeafs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MapleLeafs<\/a>, announced today that Kyle Dubas has been named the 17th General Manager in the Club\u2019s history. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TMLtalk?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#TMLtalk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Leafs PR (@LeafsPR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeafsPR\/status\/994925919331471361?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 11, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h1>Maple Leafs Promote Kyle Dubas<\/h1>\n<p>The Maple Leafs promoted Dubas after the Leafs have improved over the last two seasons.\u00a0This season, the team has a record of 49 wins and 26 losses and seven overtime losses for 105 points. The team set records for regular-season wins and points with those totals.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto finished third in the Atlantic Division and made the post-season for second straight season. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> eliminated Toronto in seven games in the first round. It was the first back-to-back playoff appearances for the club since their run from 1999-2004.<\/p>\n<p>Dubas served as general manager for the OHL&#8217;s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the AHL&#8217;s Toronto Marlies. He was an assistant general manager under Nonis and Lou Lamoriello. He came over to the\u00a0Leafs and is a protege of team president <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shanabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Shanahan<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dubas <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/toronto-maple-leafs\/kyle-dubas-named-maple-leafs-general-manager\/wcm\/321b7c7d-9ce6-46df-ac15-ca00f99f9f46\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">becomes the 17th general manager in team history<\/a>. The 32-year-old Dubas replaces Lamoriello, who will stay on as a senior advisor. Lamoriello will likely seek a general manager&#8217;s job with another team.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for the Team\u2019s Future<\/h2>\n<p>Dubas&#8217; modern approach is part of the Leafs recent form. He uses statistics and analysis in player evaluation. His stint in player personnel with a big success. Many of his former Marlies players play for the big club. He was 190-100-20-4 in his stint in charge of the AHL team.<\/p>\n<p>The promotion for Dubas raises the question of what will become of<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huntema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Hunter<\/a>,<\/strong> an assistant GM who had reportedly been in the running for the promotion. Each has played a part in the team&#8217;s successful draft classes.
