Their time as the big boys on the block is waning, however. The <strong>Edmonton Oilers<\/strong> and the <strong>Arizona Coyotes<\/strong> are the future of the Pacific Division.<\/p>\n<h2>Oilers and Coyotes: Future of the Pacific Division<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Arizona:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the Coyotes are off to a rough start (2-6-0) their future is very bright. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Domi<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duclaan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Duclair<\/a><\/strong> electrified NHL fans in the desert last year. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekmanol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Ekman-Larsson<\/a><\/strong> has been a force on the Coyotes blue line the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Arizona&#8217;s top prospects made the team out of training camp this year. They were <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stromdy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Strome<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dvorach01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Dvorak<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crousla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawson Crouse<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chychja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakob Chychrun<\/a><\/strong>. News\u00a0will be coming soon who will be sticking with the Coyotes for the full 2016-17 season.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, the Coyotes have another wave of youngsters coming to Arizona. Edmonton have a bunch of talented young forwards led by their 19-year old captain <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong>. Part of this talented young core includes <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nugenry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Nugent-Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/puljuje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse Puljujarvi<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lucicmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milan Lucic<\/a><\/strong> was brought in to help lead this young team.<\/p>\n<p>The questions for the Oilers are their blue line, whether or not they have a number one goaltender, and their paper thin farm system. Right now Edmonton&#8217;s defensive core is anchored by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sekeran01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrej Sekera<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Larsson<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klefbos01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oscar Klefbom<\/a><\/strong>. The Oilers need at minimum either youngster <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nurseda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Nurse<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/reinhgr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Griffin Reinhart<\/a><\/strong> to develop into a top-four defenseman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/talboca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Talbot<\/a><\/strong> has picked up his play from his strong second half performance of last year. Talbot needs to show this year he can be counted on as a number one net minder in this league.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news for Edmonton is the prospect pipeline is dry. At this point and time, the Oilers do not have a prospect that can project as part of their future core. The Sharks have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capfriendly.com\/teams\/sharks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">number of players<\/a> including <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burnsbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Burns<\/a><\/strong> who become unrestricted free agents at season&#8217;s end. In addition, age will become a problem for <strong>San Jose<\/strong> in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>The Ducks core is starting to get long in the tooth. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/getzlry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Getzlaf<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/perryco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Perry<\/a><\/strong> both turn 32 in May,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/keslery01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Kesler<\/a><\/strong> hits 33 next summer. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/10\/16\/los-angeles-kings-rebuild-closer-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kings<\/a> lack roster depth, and have one of the worst prospect pipelines in the sport, all while being cap-strapped.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary<\/a><\/strong> has a lot of talented players but can they keep the puck out of their own net? While the Canucks have gotten off to a decent start, it looks like they are starting a rebuild in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<h2>Vegas Baby<\/h2>\n<p>Given all the long-term issues facing most of the teams in the Pacific, there is a realistic opportunity for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/10\/25\/tough-expansion-calls-nhl-teams-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Las Vegas<\/a><\/strong> franchise to hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p>If <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> general manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcphege01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George McPhee<\/a><\/strong> can tackle the expansion draft, as well as find players in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/10\/09\/nhl-teams-in-the-nolan-patrick-sweepstakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 and 2018 amateur drafts<\/a>, plus add a couple of players in this summer&#8217;s free agency, they can be a force early on. McPhee would be wise to make sure he sustains cap flexibility, so <a href=\"https:\/\/vegashockeypodcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Las Vegas<\/a> can be a player in free agency the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>These are interesting times in the Pacific division.
