Aston-Reese will require surgery after being injured in game\u00a0three of the Penguins second-round series with the Washington Capitals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coach Sullivan confirms that as a result of the Tom Wilson hit in the 2nd period, Zach Aston-Reese has a broken jaw that will require surgery as well as a concussion.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/penguins\/status\/991508624840232965?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/astonza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Aston-Reese<\/a> Injured<\/h1>\n<p>The injury occurred\u00a0during Tuesday&#8217;s game against the rival Capitals. It was a high-intensity game for both teams, with the series tied at one game apiece.<\/p>\n<p>With just over ten minutes left in the second-period, Aston-Reese carried the puck along the boards next to the Capitals bench and received a hit from Capitals winger <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsoto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Wilson<\/a><\/strong>. This resulted in Aston-Reese bloodied on the ice and Wilson propelled into the Capitals bench. The young rookie did not return. Wilson received no on-ice penalty for the hit.<\/p>\n<p>In the regular season, Aston-Reece played 16 games, scoring four goals and 2 assists for six points. His possession numbers were 49.2 percent Corsi\u00a0and a relative Corsi of -2.5.<\/p>\n<p>The New York native joined the Penguins this season after spending time playing for Northeastern University. At Northeastern, Aston-Reese amassed an impressive 31 goals, 32\u00a0assists totalling 63 points. Aston-Reese also has recently spent some time with Penguins Affiliate team Scranton Penguins.<\/p>\n<h2>Fallout<\/h2>\n<p>Sullivan discussed the hit in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/penguins\/video\/verizon-coachs-corner\/t-277780994\/c-60204203\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> a post-game interview<\/a> &#8220;We lose a guy to a broken jaw that&#8217;s going to require surgery and a concussion because of another high hit to the head,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/penguins\/video\/verizon-coachs-corner\/t-277780994\/c-60204203\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sullivan said.<\/a> &#8220;At some point, we would hope that the league might do something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Penguins were obviously upset by referees decision\u00a0to not penalize\u00a0Wilson on the play. Still, Wilson will have to wait\u00a0for the department of player safety to review the hit and decided if it warrants any further action.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second hit by Wilson that has resulted in an injury to the Penguins in this series. In game two, he hit defencemen <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dumoubr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Dumoulin<\/a><\/strong>, who could not return to the game. The hit was also seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7TXBjhxvPRs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as questionable<\/a>. Wilson did not receive a penalty, nor did he receive any <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/04\/30\/washington-capitals-tom-wilson-will-not-have-hearing-with-dops\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supplemental discipline<\/a> from the DOPS.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n<p>Zach Aston-Reese was a bottom six forward, and may not have a vital impact directly\u00a0in\u00a0game four or the series. Still, it is a sad way for the young forwards first year to end.<\/p>\n<p>With the Social Media frenzy regarding Wilson continuing, it does mean that tensions will be fever pitched in game four on Thursday\u00a0night in Pittsburgh.
