Waddell was named the interim general manager after<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Francis<\/a><\/strong> was named the\u00a0president of hockey operations and was relieved\u00a0of his duties as general manager. Francis was recently told that he could work from home.<\/p>\n<h1>Waddell&#8217;s Experience<\/h1>\n<p>Waddell was formally the assistant general manager for the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> during the 1997-1998\u00a0season. After leaving the Red Wings he spent 13 years as general manager of the Atlanta Thrashers. He also spent\u00a0a year taking over the presidential\u00a0duties during the 2010-2011 season. Waddell was the only general manager for the Atlanta Thrashers during their 13 years in the NHL. He was the head coach for the Thrashers on two separate\u00a0occasions. Wadell was the interim head coach during the 2002-2003 season and then took over mid-season for <strong>Bob Hartley<\/strong> during the 2008-2009 season. He was a scout for the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> between 2011-2014. Waddell has spent the last four years as president of the Carolina Hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>He has spent time as part of Team USA. In 2004 he was the assistant general manager for Team USA during the World Cup of Hockey and The IIHF World Championships. The United States captured a bronze medal during the World Championships which qualified them for the 2006 Olympics. He served as general manager for the US Men&#8217;s national team in 2001 and 2002. In 2011, He was the head coach for Team USA in 2011 during the Deutschland Cup in Germany.
