Burke made an instant splash with the Flames when he fired then general manager Jay Feaster in Decemebr 2013. Brad Treliving was hired by Burke as the new general manager.

Under Brian Burke’s tenure with the Flames, the team has a 197-178-35 record. The team has also made the playoffs twice, 2015 and 2017. Unfortunately, the Flames were never able to progress past the first round. The move also comes just three days after the Flames fired head coach Glen Gulutzan and replaced him with Bill Peters.

Mutual Parting Of Ways

In a statement from CSEC President and CEO Ken King, the decision for Brian Burke to step back was mutual. King said, “When Brian came to us in September 2013 we discussed a structure and timeline of four to five years for his new role. Each year we review our mandate going forward and determined together that we would move on”.

It was also announced that the hockey operations department will be run by Treliving, vice-president of hockey operations Don Malloney and assistant general managers Craig Conroy and Brad Pascall. The Flames did not state if they were looking for a new president of hockey operations to replace Burke.

Moving Forward

The 62-year-old executive has not provided any comment on the announcement. TSN hockey insider Bob Mackenzie reported that Burke was stepping back to pursue new ventures or challenges.

Lots of speculation concerning Brian Burke’s future in CGY and whether he may move on to new ventures/challenges.
