From the dominance of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>against the Flyers\u00a0to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a><\/strong> stoning the Kings, the NHL&#8217;s elite eight will need to rely on their star players to keep their Stanley Cup dream alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Crosby&#8217;s Dominant First Round, Fleury&#8217;s Series Steal and the Final Eight\u2019s Elite<\/h1>\n<p>The pressure and drama of the NHL playoffs creates heroes. This year is no exception. The best player in the world continued to torture his instate rival. An unlikely pair of forwards powered the Presidents Trophy winners over an upstart challenger. As always at this time of year, goaltending reigns supreme. All this and we are only through round one.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Boston Bruins &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pastrda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Pastrnak<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> were the only team to need seven games to finish off their first-round opponents, the never-say-die <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pastrda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Pastrnak<\/a><\/strong> was an integral part of the Bruins third-period comeback against the Leafs in Game 7; scoring to increase the team&#8217;s lead by two. Pastrnak, along with linemate <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrice Bergeron<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marchbr03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Marchand<\/a><\/strong> dominated Toronto combining for 30 points in the series, including seven points in game seven. Pastrnak led the way for the Bruins. He is currently tied with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/guentja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Guentzel<\/a><\/strong> for the league lead in playoff points with five goals and eight assists.<\/p>\n<p>The Bruins will be taking on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> in Round Two. Over the course of the regular season, Boston went 3-1 against Tampa Bay. In order for the Bruins to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, they must continue to apply the same pressure they had throughout the regular season.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nashville Predators &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsoau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Watson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sissoco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colton Sissons<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The league\u2019s best team this year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a>, will have their work cut out for them in Round Two, as they face the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It was an unlikely duo that pushed the Preds past the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>. Forwards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsoau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Austin Watson<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sissoco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colton Sissons<\/strong><\/a> stepped up in round one, combining for 14 points. Both Watson and Sissons have had points streaks throughout their first-round series and lead their team with 7 points apiece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">If the Predators want to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final, they need their depth scoring. Last year&#8217;s defeat at the hands of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> was partly due to the lack of points production across all lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Pittsburgh Penguins &#8211; Sidney Crosby<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pittsburgh Penguins will be relying on their captain, Sidney Crosby, as they face the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> for the third year in-a-row in the second round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the course of the Penguins\u2019 six games against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>, Crosby continued to dominate the Flyers, with an impressive 13 points, which ties him for the playoff lead. He\u2019s been an important factor in all four of Pittsburgh\u2019s wins, scoring in each. This productivity has put him in a tie for second in goals and assists with his teammate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/guentja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Guentzel<\/a>. It&#8217;s no surprise the back-to-back Conn Smyth winner is taking his game to another level in the playoffs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Crosby, along with the rest of the Penguins, must keep up their productivity if they want to have the same success in Round Two. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/holtbbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Braden Holtby<\/a><\/strong> has had weak playoff&#8217;s in the past but was impressive in coming off the bench to stimy the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> in Round One.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>San Jose Sharks &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesma02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Jones<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> pulled off the only upset in round one, sweeping their\u00a0in-state<b> <\/b>rivals the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a> in four games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thanks to the spectacular play of goaltender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Martin Jones<\/strong><\/a>, the Sharks outscored the Ducks 16-4 in the series. Jones\u2019 1.00 GAA and .970 save percentage put him in second place, right behind his next oppositional goaltender, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Combined, Fleury and Jones allowed only 7 goals throughout 8 games. They were also the only two goalies to sweep their first-round opponents. This upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/04\/25\/san-jose-sharks-vs-vegas-golden-knights-second-round-series-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playoff series<\/a> will surely be a goaltending battle for the ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Tampa Bay Lightning &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kucheni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Kucherov<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s no denying that the Tampa Bay Lightning\u2019s regular season and playoff MVP would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kucheni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nikita Kucherov<\/strong><\/a>. The Lightning easily took down the upstart <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>\u00a0in large part to Kucherov&#8217;s play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kucherov completely tore up his first-round series. He will most likely continue with the terrifying pace he\u2019s been on all year. He currently ranks second in points with 10 and was a key piece for the Lightning through round\u00a0one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Lightning had a substantial break while waiting for their second-round foes, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0Boston Bruins<\/span>, to finish their first-round series against the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0Toronto Maple Leafs<\/span>. While the regular season counts for nothing in the playoffs, the Bruins did hold a 3-1 edge over the Lightning. In what promises to be a fast and exciting series, Tampa needs their star winger to continue his strong play.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Vegas Golden Knights &#8211; Marc-Andre Fleury<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a>\u00a0unlikely run this season continues into the second round of the NHL playoffs. Their storey book run this year has been in large part due to the play of their veteran goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fleury only allowed three goals in four games and had two shutouts against the aggressive <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. He leads all goalies with a .65 GAA and .977 save percentage, in the playoffs. Despite a Golden Knights series win, both Fleury and goaltender <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quickjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Quick<\/a><\/strong> put up impressive numbers in the opening round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Playing for an expansion team can be risky, but Flower arguably had one of the best years of his career. It\u2019s only natural that play would continue into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Washington Capitals &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/holtbbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Braden Holtby<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite not starting the playoff series, Braden Holtby managed to help the Washington Capitals climb back from a 0-2 series deficit against the Columbus Blue Jackets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Holtby did not have a strong regular season. These struggels led Capitals coach Barry Trotz to go with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grubaph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philipp Grubauer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to start the series. That was until the third period of Game 2. With the Capitals needing a boost, Trotz went back to Holtby, who did not dissapoint. Holtby saved 137 of 147 shots he faced and ended the series with a 1.97 GAA and .932 save percentage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Multiple factors including the Capitals penalty killers, and star power were huge in their comeback against the Blue Jackets. They must keep up the pace in order to finally make it out of the second round and overcome their playoff nemesiss, Pittsburgh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Winnipeg Jets &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helleco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor Hellebuyck<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Winnipeg Jets have shaped themselves into being one of the most feared teams in the league this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">During the playoffs, a team lives and dies by their goaltending. Although shaky in Game 3 against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> where he allowed six goals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helleco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor Hellebuyck<\/strong><\/a> posted a 1.93 GAA and .924 save percentage along with back-to-back shutouts in Game 4 and 5 to help the Jets advance to the next round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Winnipeg\u2019s second-round<b>\u00a0<\/b>rivals,\u00a0the Nashville Predators, will be a greater test. This incarnation of the Jets (via Atlanta) team has never made it past the first round. Icing their best team in history, the team is hungry for more.
