The surgery was performed in New York City on Tuesday by Dr. William Levine. Byron is expected to need about six months to recover. However, the injury didn&#8217;t stop the former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/12\/20\/paul-byron-one-of-the-greatest-waiver-claims\/\" target=\"_self\">waiver-wire<\/a>\u00a0pickup from recording his second straight 20-goal season. Byron has one year remaining on a three-year contract he signed in 2016. It carries a cap hit of $1.167 million per season.<\/p>\n<p>This season, Byron scored 20 goals and 15 assists for 35 points in 82 games. He also added 23 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.7 percent Corsi\u00a0and a relative Corsi of +0.4.<\/p>\n<p>Over his\u00a0eight-year NHL career,\u00a0Byron\u00a0has played for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a>, and the Habs. He has put up\u00a070\u00a0goals and 74\u00a0assists for 144\u00a0career points in 363\u00a0career games. Byron has also added a goal in six career playoff games. He was originally drafted in the sixth-round, 179th\u00a0overall of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres.<\/p>\n<p>Byron is a key piece of the Habs. He is versatile enough to play all three forward positions, though he does his best work on the wing. He also is used on both the penalty kill and power play units. Byron is capable of moving up and down the lineup with ease, as his game translates in both offensive and defensive roles.
