Early Friday morning, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety<\/strong> announced that Philadelphia Flyers<\/strong> forward Dale Weise<\/a><\/strong> was to have a hearing. They called Weise to answer for a hit to the head on Anaheim Ducks<\/strong> defenseman Korbinian Holzer<\/a><\/strong> in their Thursday night match-up.<\/p>\n

Flyers Dale Weise Suspended 3 Games for Illegal Hit to Head<\/h3>\n

The incident occurred at 7:35 of the second period. \u00a0Weise went in for a hit on Holzer, who had chipped the puck up ice. He\u00a0ended up making contact to Holzer’s head with his shoulder. While Weise’s intention to hit was not questioned, his method of doing so was. Weise\u00a0was criticized for making the head the main point of contact, as the Department of Player Safety said in their video regarding the suspension (Below). \u00a0Weise was not penalized on the play. Holzer also went on to continue to play in the game, and did not have any apparent injury.<\/p>\n

Under the terms of the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement<\/strong><\/a> as well as Weise’s average annual salary, he will be forfeiting a total of $39,166.68. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund<\/strong>. This is Dale Weise’s second career suspension for an illegal hit to the head. He was also suspended\u00a0in 2013. Since arriving in Philadelphia as a free agent from Chicago this off-season, Weise has played in the Flyers first four games. However, he has yet to tally any points.<\/p>\n

The Flyers are currently 1-2-1 and play their next game against the Carolina Hurricanes<\/strong> on Saturday. \u00a0Weise is scheduled to return from his suspension on Tuesday, October 25, when the Flyers host the Buffalo Sabres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
