{"id":25508,"date":"2018-03-19T10:06:06","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T14:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=25508"},"modified":"2018-03-19T10:06:06","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T14:06:06","slug":"boston-bruins-david-backes-injures-leg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/03\/19\/boston-bruins-david-backes-injures-leg\/","title":{"rendered":"Boston Bruins David Backes Injures Leg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> announced that forward <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backeda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Backes<\/a><\/strong> is sidelined indefinitely with a leg injury.\u00a0 He will miss at least the next two games, and then be re-evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backeda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Backes<\/a> returned late [Saturday] night with the team. He did meet with our doctors, and they reevaluated the cut. They did some work on it. Obviously, you\u2019ve got great medical care down in Tampa; we\u2019re thankful for that, but our guys wanted their own hands and eyes on it,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/boston\/bruins\/backes-will-be-out-couple-games-right-leg-laceration\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said Bruins general manager Don Sweeney<\/a>. \u201cA timetable hasn\u2019t been set for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can imagine it was a pretty significant cut, and now that it\u2019s been, sort of, re-cleaned and addressed accordingly, we\u2019ll just let nature take its course, let it heal. I don\u2019t have a definitive timetable on that one, certainly not day to day. I would suspect he\u2019ll be out for a couple games, and then we\u2019ll reevaluate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h1>David Backes Injured<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>He and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> forward <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gourdya01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yanni Gourde<\/a><\/strong> both hit the ice and went sliding into the net Lightning net. Gourde ended up spinning a bit, and in doing so, his skate appeared to go across Backes\u2019 leg.<\/p>\n<p>Backes skated to the bench in clear discomfort and did not return to the bench.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So far this season, he scored 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 49 games. He also added 49 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 55.8 percent Corsi\u00a0and a relative Corsi of 2.4.<\/p>\n<p>Over his 11-year NHL career Backes has played for the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins. He has put up 234 goals and 291 assists for 525 career points in 850 career games. He was originally drafted in the 2nd round, 62nd overall of the 2003 NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues<i><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Backes is said to have <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2018\/03\/david-backes-injury-bruins-forward-leaves-game-after-leg-gets-cut-by-skate\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gotten multiple stitches in his leg<\/a> right after skating off to the locker room.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for the Future<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s another injury setback for Backes, who missed 17 games this season after a bout with diverticulitis. The subsequent illness forced the Minnesota State product to get colon surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Backes&#8217; injury could also force more line-juggling for the Bruins, who are without the services of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrice Bergeron<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcavoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a><\/strong> is also out for an extended period of time for Boston.
