The Washington Capitals<\/a> announced on Friday night that the club has signed general manager Brian MacLellan<\/a><\/strong> to a contract extension. Details of the contract were not released, however many reports indicate that it is a multi-year extension.<\/p>\n

Brian MacLellan Signed a Contract Extension with The Washington Capitals<\/h1>\n

The Washington Capitals have signed general manager Brian MacLellan to an extension. This season, the Capitals are 37-23-7 and are currently in second place in the Metropolitan\u00a0Division.<\/p>\n

The Caps are 193-116-34 in his three-plus\u00a0seasons as general manager. His most successful season was in 2015-2016 when the Capitals won the President’s trophy.<\/p>\n

What This Means for the Future<\/h1>\n

Before being hired as general manager, MacLellan was the assistant general manager, working under George McPhee<\/a><\/strong>. When McPhee was fired after missing the playoffs in the 2013-14 season, MacLellan was promoted to run the club. He has been a part of the Capitals organization for 13 years before becoming general manager. In the three seasons as general manager, the Capitals have not missed the playoffs. In 2015-16 the Capitals ended up winning the President’s trophy. One thing the Capitals are still searching for is a Stanley Cup Championship. They have not made it past the second round of the playoffs since their lone Stanley Cup Final appearance in the 1997-98 season.<\/p>\n

One of his main goals has been restructuring the defence after losing key pieces like Kevin Shattenkirk<\/a><\/strong>, Karl Alzner<\/a><\/strong>, and Nate Schmidt<\/a><\/strong> over the\u00a0course of the off-season. Young defenders\u00a0Christian Djoos<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and Madison Bowey<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>joined the\u00a0club\u00a0this\u00a0season.\u00a0The Capitals have gotten continued to get younger on the blueline,\u00a0acquiring defencemen<\/a> Jakub Jerabek<\/a><\/b> from the Montreal Canadiens<\/a>, and Michal Kempny<\/a><\/strong> from the<\/a> Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n
