Fehr has played this season in the AHL on a loan to the San Diego Gulls. The Gulls are the Anaheim Ducks farm team. He has 17 goals, 11 assists, for 28 Points in 34 Games played this year. Fehr has also played four games with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and had 0 points.

San Jose needs depth at Centre due to injuries and wants for a playoff run. Their depth has been seriously challenged by Joe Thornton‘s injury, and while Fehr is not a replacement for Thornton, he can help shore up the bottom line. San Jose currently has 72 points in 59 games, good for second place in the Pacific. It is a tight race in that division but the Sharks look like they want to make a run for the playoffs.

As for Toronto, they have lots of young NHL depth. Fehr was not going to be a mainstay for the team. The Leafs will be happy just getting any type of asset back for a guy who was not even playing on their AHL team. Fehr was brought in at last years trade deadline in a trade that sent Frank Corrado to Pittsburgh for Eric Fehr, Steve Olesky, and a fourth-round draft pick. Fehr only played one game with the Leafs last season. This move also clears room for the Leafs under the 50-contract limit.

Eric Fehr is making $2 million this year but will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Main Photo: TORONTO, ON – MARCH 20: Toronto Maple Leafs Center Eric Fehr (23) in warmups prior to the regular season NHL game between the Boston Bruins and Toronto maple Leafs on March 20, 2017 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, ON.
