Currently, the number one prize of the 2017 NHL Draft is two-way center <strong>Nolan Patrick<\/strong>. Patrick has been called the &#8220;complete NHL package&#8221;. What better way to rebuild or start one&#8217;s franchise than with a number one center. So which NHL teams are the prime contenders in the Nolan Patrick sweepstakes?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>NHL Teams in the Nolan Patrick Sweepstakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Las Vegas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the Las Vegas franchise adds a team name the next big date on the calendar for the organization will be the night of the NHL lottery. Las Vegas is the only organization where it knowns for sure they will be a contender for the #1 overall pick in the 2017 draft.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas is set at the number three odds for the 2017 draft lottery. Best case scenario is general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/vegashockeypodcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>George McPhee<\/strong><\/a> will be selecting first\u00a0overall in the June entry\u00a0draft. Worst case scenario is Las Vegas will select sixth overall. In addition, the Canucks are a lineup laden with thirty-plus-year-old veterans. The Sedin twins and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/millery01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Miller<\/strong><\/a> highlight this list.<\/p>\n<p>This season for the Canucks will be about the development of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/horvabo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bo Horvat<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gudbrer01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Erik Gudbranson<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jacob Markstrom<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/virtaja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Virtanen<\/strong><\/a> and some of Vancouver&#8217;s young blue liners.<\/p>\n<p>Newly signed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/erikslo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Loui Eriksson<\/strong><\/a> will add scoring and a veteran presence. Odds are a number of veteran players will be traded this season starting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burroal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alexandre Burrows<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Canucks are just starting their rebuild.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Columbus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There is a lot of issues regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/09\/09\/puck-drop-preview-2016-17-columbus-blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. Where does one begin? It starts in goal where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bobrose01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sergei Bobrovsky<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0whose career has been riddled with injuries and inconsistency.<\/p>\n<p>Then it moves to the blue line where Columbus is hoping <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Jones<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Werenski, <\/a><\/strong>and<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ryan Murray <\/a><\/strong>can be impact blue liners for years to come. This could be a bright spot for the Blue Jackets big picture. However, young defenseman take time to develop and in all likelihood that will be on display this season.<\/p>\n<p>While trading for Seth Jones helped Columbus much-maligned blue line; it cost them dearly at the center position. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johanry01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Johansen<\/strong><\/a> is now gone and the Blue Jackets are looking for answers at the center position. Blue Jackets general manager\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kekalja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jarmo Kakalainen<\/strong><\/a> is hoping 2016 third\u00a0overall draft pick, <strong>Pierre-Luc Dubois<\/strong> is in Columbus sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Columbus has to deal with what may be the toughest division in hockey in the Metropolitan.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A couple young defensemen are looking to defy the odds and crack some rosters.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Nw9N832BL1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/Nw9N832BL1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NHL (@NHL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NHL\/status\/784114762955141121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 6, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Winnipeg<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/09\/30\/puck-drop-preview-2016-17-winnipeg-jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>\u00a0are an organization loaded with young talent, they do have a number of concerns. How will the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/troubja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jacob Trouba<\/strong><\/a> saga end for the Jets? When does Winnipeg turn over the goalie reigns to top prospect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helleco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor Hellebuyck<\/strong><\/a> this season? How do the Jets compete in the brutal Central division this year and moving forward?<\/p>\n<p>There is no question the Winnipeg core will be built around <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/08\/23\/key-players-in-the-nhls-central-division\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Patrick Laine<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/scheima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mark Scheifele<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ehlerni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nikolaj Ehlers<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/connoky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kyle Connor<\/strong><\/a> while being led by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/byfugdu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dustin Byfuglien<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Blake Wheeler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While the future talent is over-flowing in Winnipeg, many things need to come together for this franchise to return to post-season play.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The future seems very bright and exciting for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/09\/27\/puck-drop-preview-2016-17-toronto-maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. The upcoming season for the Leafs will be about the development of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riellmo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Morgan Reilly<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Auston Matthews<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nylanwi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>William Nylander<\/strong><\/a>, and possibly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mitch Marner<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt head coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/coaches\/babcomi99c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Babcock<\/strong><\/a> will get the most out of the Maple Leafs roster. Having said that this is still a team at least a year away from returning to the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Frederik Andersen<\/strong><\/a> will not have the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2016\/09\/27\/nhl-atlantic-blue-line-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same defensive team<\/a> in front of him in Toronto as he did with the Anaheim Ducks.
