{"id":18038,"date":"2017-10-23T07:00:29","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=18038"},"modified":"2017-10-23T02:48:50","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T06:48:50","slug":"blue-jackets-powerplay-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/10\/23\/blue-jackets-powerplay-woes\/","title":{"rendered":"Columbus Blue Jackets Powerplay Woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2016-17 season, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>\u00a0powerplay unit was more than a little successful. They saw 211 opportunities with 42 powerplay goals, good for a 19.91% conversion rate; .81% better than the league average. Now, just seven games into the season, the Blue Jackets luck on the powerplay seems to be running out. So far, they have seen 22 powerplay opportunities and have only scored two goals, a conversation rate of 9.09%. Right now, league average is 19.33%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Columbus Blue Jackets Powerplay Woes<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, they saw the fewest power play opportunities, but still ended up 12th best in the league in power play percentage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There a few reasons why Columbus might be struggling on the man-advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Lack of Gagner<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2016 off-season, the Blue Jackets signed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gagnesa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Gagner<\/a><\/strong> to a one-year contract for $650,000. After struggling with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>, Columbus decided to give Gagner a \u201cprove-it\u201d contract for him to prove that he could stay in the league. Originally drafted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> in 2007 with the 6th overall pick, Gagner bounced from the Oilers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes <\/a>to the Flyers and finally to Columbus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people were not sure what to expect with the Gagner signing, he only had eight goals and eight assists in 53 games for the Flyers, he even played nine games for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lehigh Valley Phantoms &#8211; the Flyers AHL team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But what Gagner showed is that he could excel on the powerplay. After the season ended, Gagner had eight powerplay goals\u00a0and 10 powerplay assists. While on the powerplay Gagner had a Relative Corsi-For percentage (Rel.CF%) of 3.7% and a GF\/60 of 9.4. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Sam Gagner\u2019s 17th goal of the season (another PPG) gives the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead after two. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CBJ?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#CBJ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R41WPP3rza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/R41WPP3rza<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1st Ohio Battery (@1stOhioBattery) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1stOhioBattery\/status\/840378044871299072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 11, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It certainly hurts to lose a player who helped boost the powerplay, especially one with such a low cap hit. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Defensemen Slump<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Werenski<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s rookie season took Columbus and the hockey world by storm. At just 19 years old he helped quarterback one of the most successful powerplays in the league. His Rel.CF% was a 2.2%, impressive for a rookie defenseman, and a GF\/60 of 9.6. He also had an xGF (expected goals for) of 30.24. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course with the season being only eight games old all the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. Right now Werenski has played 24 minutes of powerplay time in through eight games. Jones\u2019s Rel.CF% is a -3.05 and xGF is a 1.56. Jones does have less powerplay time than Werenski, as he quarterbacks the second unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Changes and Lack of Chances for the Blue Jackets<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a major change in the powerplay, and on the first line, these days. Over the off-season general manager, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kekalja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarmo Kekalainen <\/a><\/strong>added firepower in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a><\/strong>, a player who is expected to score goals in key moments. As of right now, Panarin only has one point on the powerplay, an assist. The line of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/atkinca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Atkinson<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wennbal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Wennberg<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Panarin has been doing well at even strength, so it might be only a matter of time until they have a connection on the powerplay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of 31 teams, the Blue Jackets rank 30th in terms of powerplay opportunities with 19, only the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Minnesota Wild <\/a>have fewer with 15. Columbus is not getting many chances to actually get on the powerplay and try to do something, even though they did have three opportunities against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning <\/a>on the 19th. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team is also still a little pass-happy when it comes to the powerplay, instead of trying to put something on net, they\u2019d rather pass to try to find the perfect goal. Right now they have a GF\/60 of 1.74 and an xGF of 2.64. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Room for Improvement<\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Torts also made an interesting comment on the PP, saying Werenski is comfortable passing to Wennberg. Saturday night against the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a>, Werenski made a pass to Panarin who then made a slick pass to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foligni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Foligno<\/a><\/strong> for their first powerplay goal in 18 attempts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/bluejackets\/video\/embed\/folignos-ppg-opens-the-scoring\/t-277443706\/c-53735703?partnerId=cbj-web-int-com-mwl-recap1021?autostart=false\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Panarin has been one of the best playmakers on the Blue Jackets so far, despite the fact that he was traded to score goals, he has a team-leading eight assists. On the powerplay, he has a Rel.CF% of 8.12% and an xGF of 1.65.<\/p>\n<p>The powerplay will not stay at the 9.09% conversion, the team is still learning how to mix in the news players and soon things will click. The good news is that the penalty kill is above league average.
