The team sits atop the Eastern Conference with a 6-1 record. For a comparison, last season through seven games, the Leafs\u2019 record was 2-2-3. Their sixth win would not come until November 11th, a 6-3 thumping of the Philadelphia Flyers.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at six factors that have driven the Leafs\u2019 success early on.<\/p>\n<h1>Factors Driving The Toronto Maple Leafs Hot Start<\/h1>\n<h2>Awesome Auston<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Auston Matthews<\/strong><\/a> has continued to wow the league, but that should go without saying.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year old sophomore has netted six goals through the Leafs\u2019 first seven games, with five goals at even strength.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I have no idea how he does this&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews makes it 3-1. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xMlaMn60Sr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/xMlaMn60Sr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Flintor (@TheFlintor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheFlintor\/status\/920805650573115392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 19, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That release is\u2026 something.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews has also scored two game-winners in overtime, good for ten career game-winning goals already. While he is shooting at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an absurd 31.6%<\/a>\u00a0right now, Matthews\u2019 consistency early on has been arguably as impressive as his four-goal explosion to open last season.<\/p>\n<h2>The Vets Are Alright, Too<\/h2>\n<p>While some Leafs veterans, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bozakty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyler Bozak<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0have been slow out of the gate, others have been contributing at a high level.<\/p>\n<p>Consider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kadrina01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nazem Kadri<\/strong><\/a>. Coming off of a career year that saw him put up 32 goals and 61 points, Kadri has shown up ready to play. He&#8217;s notched four goals and four assists through his first seven games. He&#8217;s also opened up the scoring on two occasions, against the Jets and the Red Wings.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\">Nazem Kadri ? 1-0 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/snRhKPd0LX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/snRhKPd0LX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Flintor (@TheFlintor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheFlintor\/status\/920800085222375426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 18, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marlepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Patrick Marleau<\/strong><\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/patrick-marleau-signs-three-year-deal-with-maple-leafs\/c-290198446\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inked a massive three-year, $18.75MM<\/a>\u00a0contract with the Leafs in the offseason, and has three goals so far.<\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanrija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>James van Riemsdyk<\/strong><\/a>, whose line has been criticised for their defensive issues, has potted four goals early on. If he continues to produce, he looks poised to give the Leafs a tough decision to make as he approaches UFA status.<\/p>\n<h2>Special Teams<\/h2>\n<p>The Power Play is hot, and the PK is steady.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs\u2019 Power Play has been firing on all cylinders early on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/teams\/TOR\/2018.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shooting a sky-high 30% through seven games<\/a>\u00a0(league average is 18.98%).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Penalty Kill has been operating at a clip of 83.33%, just above the league average of 81.02%. Steady contributions from new additions<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fehrer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Eric Fehr<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hainsro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ron Hainsey<\/strong><\/a> have worked well with established PK stalwarts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hymanza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Hyman<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/komarle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Leo Komarov<\/strong><\/a> to keep Leafs in check shorthanded.<\/p>\n<h2>Scoring Depth<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s come as no surprise that the Leafs are one of the deeper teams in the league.<\/p>\n<p>On what other teams could a rookie standout who scored 61 points<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/maple-leafs-mitch-marner-skates-4th-line-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> be demoted to the fourth line without the team missing a beat?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mitch Marner<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s struggles and the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nylanwi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>William Nylander<\/strong><\/a> has only potted two goals (one empty-net) early on, the Leafs continue to serge. Depth contributions from other Leaf sophomores <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hymanza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Hyman<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownco02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor Brown<\/strong><\/a> (3 goals apiece) have shown that when the goals have gone a little dry for the big names, others are ready to step up.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Connor Brown scores a prototypical hard-work goal to put the Leafs up 1-0 over Washington in the third period <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sLz8wiYlcC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/sLz8wiYlcC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeff Veillette (@JeffVeillette) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffVeillette\/status\/920456877187764224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 18, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS<\/h2>\n<p>When the Leafs announced that they\u2019d be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/sports\/leafs\/2017\/05\/02\/nikita-zaitsev-inks-seven-year-extension-with-the-maple-leafs.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paying <strong>Nikita Zaitsev<\/strong> $4.5 Million <\/a>per year for the next seven years, many were skeptical, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/maple-leafs-sign-veteran-defenceman-ron-hainsey-two-year-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$6 Million over 2 years<\/a> for the aforementioned Hainsey.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs\u2019 top four, however, has looked worthy of their paychecks early on. Some might disagree, considering the Leafs are still 23rd in the league in Goals Against \/ 60 at 2.85 <a href=\"http:\/\/corsica.hockey\/team-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to Corsica<\/a>, but the Leafs D-core has been playing to their strengths; driving the offense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hainsro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Gardiner<\/strong><\/a> looks offensively poised. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zaitsni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nikita Zaitsev<\/strong><\/a> has looked more confident scoring two early goals to kick off the season. With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carrico01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor Carrick<\/strong><\/a> able to slide down onto the third pair with Hainsey now in the mix, the Leafs\u2019 defence has \u2014 even if just in flashes \u2014 shown the potential to make more noise moving forward on the offensive end.<\/p>\n<h2>FREDDY &#8211; STILL STEADY?<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, this one does get a little more controversial.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no lie that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Frederik Andersen<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s .899 save percentage through six games is nothing to write home about. But Freddie has come up clutch on a couple of vital occasions early on in this season. Plus, coming off a shutout, he appears to be rounding back into form.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it was Andersen who kept the Leafs in the game after taking three early penalties in their season opener against the Jets.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhl.com\/scores\/htmlreports\/20172018\/GS020001.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He shut the door with a 9.46 save percentage as the Jets went 0-8 on the Power Play<\/a>. Lose your first game, and a still-young team might tense up a little.<\/p>\n<p>In Andersen\u2019s most recent game, he was steady as could be, stopping all 30 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.
