{"id":17458,"date":"2017-10-10T14:43:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T18:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=17458"},"modified":"2017-10-10T14:43:02","modified_gmt":"2017-10-10T18:43:02","slug":"the-fall-and-rise-of-sergei-bobrovsky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/10\/10\/the-fall-and-rise-of-sergei-bobrovsky\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fall and Rise of Sergei Bobrovsky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bobrose01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Bobrovsky<\/a><\/strong> won the Vezina Trophy after the 2012-13 season, posting a .932 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against-average. He would also have a high-danger save percentage (HDSv%) of 82.73% and a low-danger save percentage (LDSv%) of 97.75%. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> did not make the playoffs that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next year, Bobrovsky would be placed on the Injured Reserve December 4th, 2013 and would not play a game until January 6th, 2014. The Blue Jackets would go on to make the playoffs and Bobrovsky would finish 8th in the Vezina voting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Blue Jackets would not make the playoffs in the 2014-15 season and Bobrovsky had an average year with a .918 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against-average. He had a HDSv% of 80.18% and a LDSv% of 98.27%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, things get a little tough.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fall, or the 2015-16 Season<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That summer, Bobrovsky was the starting goaltender for Team Russia during the 2015 IIHF World Championship and would later go on to help Russia to a silver medal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the gold medal game, Bobrovsky allowed six goals on 37 shots, but it was against a Team Canada that was composed of players like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/giroucl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude Giroux<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/seguity01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Seguin<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it looked like things were on the rise. The Blue Jackets were able to lock up <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johanry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Johansen<\/a><\/strong> for two years and he got a shiny new linemate in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/saadbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Saad<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foligni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Foligno<\/a><\/strong> was coming off a career high year with 32 goals and 42 assists and signed a six-year contract with an AAV of $5.5 million. Foligno was also later named captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also during that off-season, Bobrovksy gained over ten pounds of muscle in hopes that would decrease the chance of another groin injury. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a lot of hope going into the season; media types had predicted Columbus making the playoffs that year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the season started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Eight <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first four games, Bobrovsky had an average save percentage of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">832 and a 5.06 goals-against-average. D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uring the second game of the season, he was pulled after two periods in favor of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcelhcu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curtis McElhinney<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was after the fourth game of the season &#8211; the fourth loss of the season &#8211; that caused the most concern for Bobrovsky.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CBJ?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#CBJ<\/a> G Sergei Bobrovsky: &#8220;I have zero confidence right now. It&#8217;s a tough time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Shawn Mitchell (@smitchcd) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/smitchcd\/status\/654484537213370368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 15, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of \u2018what ifs\u2019 after that. What if <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richato01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Richards<\/a><\/strong> had done this, what if Richards hadn\u2019t done that &#8211; but the biggest one is what if Richards didn\u2019t play Bobrovsky the game after that statement? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Richards did play Bobrovsky, and even said that he had full confidence in his goaltender. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Blue Jackets would lose 6-3 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> two nights later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the story goes, Columbus would end up losing the first seven games, firing Richards and hiring John Tortorella, then losing one more game before their first win. The thought was that hopefully Tortorella would be able to turn the ship around. No one, players or coaches, thought they\u2019d make the playoffs, but maybe they could finish above dead last. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a month they looked like a decent hockey team. They won eight games out of 13 in November, including not one, but two 2-1 victories over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> and a 3-1 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a>. Bobrovsky would win all eight of those games.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky&#8217;s Injury and Re-Injury<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovksy would leave the December 8th game against the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a> early and on December 10th, he would be placed on Injured Reserve with a groin strain. Just twenty days later, less than the three weeks he was estimated to be out, he was activated from IR. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, just a couple of weeks after that, Columbus would put him back on IR. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, he was activated off of IR and would play January 19th, a 6-3 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a>, and January 21st, a 4-2 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a>, before being put back on IR.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CBJ?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#CBJ<\/a> activate Foligno and Calvert, place Bobrovsky and Savard on injured reserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Shawn Mitchell (@smitchcd) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/smitchcd\/status\/690611401828777984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 22, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky would not play again until March 11th. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/korpijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joonas Korpisalo<\/a><\/strong> would go on to be the Blue Jackets goaltender who led in wins for the season. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rise, or the 2016-17 Season<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the off-season before, Bobrovsky would go off to the IIHF World Championship to play for Team Russia. He would help them to a bronze medal. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What can be better than waking up on Sunday and enjoying one of Sergei Bobrovsky&#8217;s best saves at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IIHFWorlds?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#IIHFWorlds<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cx0BUCdL7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/cx0BUCdL7z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Russia Hockey (@russiahockey_en) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/russiahockey_en\/status\/736832725143945216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky played in nine games, allowed 15 goals, and had a .931 save percentage for the tournament. Even with his incredible play, Blue Jacket fans did not want to get their hopes up that this would be the Bobrovsky that played for them throughout 82 games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expectations going into the season were very low. There were projections of Columbus finishing in the bottom ten and that Tortorella would be the first coach fired of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September, Bobrovsky would be the starting goaltender for Team Russia in the World Cup of Hockey. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In pre-tournament game against Team Canada, Bobrovsky would make 45 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss for Team Russia. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zaitsni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Zaitsev<\/a><\/strong> said the goaltender was, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/sergei-bobrovsky-will-be-canadas-biggest-obstacle-in-world-cup-of-hockey-semi-against-russia\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe most important part to our team.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the game against Team Finland, Bobrovksy had a 21-save shutout. He also backstopped Team Russia to a 4-3 win against Team North America, arguably one of the most skilled teams, to put them into the semi-finals against Canada. Team Canada was their normal selves and Team Russia lost 5-3, Bobrovsky made 42 saves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important part of Bobrovsky\u2019s off-season was the fact that he lost seventeen pounds, looking to be more lighter instead of bulking up like the last off-season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October was a slow start for Columbus, winning three games, losing three, and losing the other in overtime. It was a much improved start for the Blue Jackets compared to last year. In the first seven games, Bobrovsky already posted two shutouts, one against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> and the other against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His next shutout came November 4th with a 10-0 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>, who had yet to lose a game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Streak<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From November 29th to January 3rd, the Columbus Blue Jackets did not lose a single game. They won 16 games in a row, good enough for the second longest streak in league history. Bobrovsky would play 14 of those games <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the month of December, Bobrovsky was named first Star of the month for the league. During the month of December he started, and won, 12 games in a row. His save percentage during the month was .939 with a 1.75 goals-against-average. In nine of those 12 starts, he allowed two goals or less. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky was the first Columbus Blue Jacket to ever be named the NHL&#8217;s first star of the month. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playoff Bound<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March was an exciting time for the Columbus Blue Jackets for both players and fans. With roughly a month and a half until the regular season came to a close, the countdown into how many games teams had to win before they clinched their spot were circulating around. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March started off with Bobrovsky posting a 38-save shutout against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a>. Three days later, Bobrovsky would get a 20-save shutout against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> and then two days later he would get his third straight shutout (33 saves) against the New Jersey Devils. Before the three game shutout streak, Bobrovsky lost a 1-0 overtime match against the Montreal Canadiens. He had not given up a regulation goal in four games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of March, in the game against the Devils, Bobrovsky and the Blue Jackets would win 4-1. With that win, Columbus earned themselves just their third trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky Making the Case for a 2nd Vezina<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the 16-game win streak, many were saying that the Vezina was Bobrovsky\u2019s to lose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He finished the season with a .931 save percentage and a 2.06 goals-against-average, after starting in 63 of 82 games. He also had seven shutouts throughout those 63 games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky also had a HDSv% of 84.1%. This was the second highest HDSv% for goalies playing more than 50 games. Only <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a><\/strong> had a higher HDSv% at a 85.27%, playing in one less game than Bobrovsky did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His save percentage while Columbus was on the penalty kill was an 89.27%,\u00a0 with a HDSv% of 77.23%. His save percentage at even strength was 93.83%, with a HDSv% of 85.49%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky would later win the Vezina, becoming the only active goaltender to have won it twice. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Tale of Two Bobrovsky&#8217;s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bobrovsky we saw in 2015-16 probably isn\u2019t close to the Bobrovsky we\u2019ll see this season, but that doesn\u2019t mean the 2016-17 Bobrovsky was a fluke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Bobrovsky set all sorts of new records that he most likely won\u2019t break the very next year. Having a goals-agaisnt-average just above two goals is very hard to do, especially with playing over 60 games like he did last year. He got extremely lucky in not getting injured and having defensemen like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Jones<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Werenski<\/a><\/strong> helping him out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team this year got younger, and with that comes rookie mistakes. Currently, there\u2019s one rookie defenseman, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlsga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabriel Carlsson<\/a><\/strong>, and two rookie forwards, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duboipi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre-Luc Dubois<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/milanso01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sonny Milano<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobrovsky most likely isn\u2019t going to playing over 60 games, which means Korpisalo will have to make some starts and have to solidify his back-up position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a Vezina repeat? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most fans would rather see Bobrovsky healthy and the Blue Jackets win their first playoff series. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Main Photo:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"uE3PKxpvS8lfAl0Q8PHhqg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.ca\/detail\/859212532\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:&#8217;uE3PKxpvS8lfAl0Q8PHhqg&#8217;,sig:&#8217;UPCi4s-kcxrIBev6pzUoqMAtrhOpB6gfeM8rn2O7NH0=&#8217;,w:&#8217;594px&#8217;,h:&#8217;396px&#8217;,items:&#8217;859212532&#8242;,caption: true ,tld:&#8217;ca&#8217;,is360: false })});<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sergei Bobrovsky won the Vezina Trophy after the 2012-13 season, posting a .932 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against-average.
