Diverticulitis is a condition in which pouches, found on the inside of the colon, become inflamed, irritated, and/or infected. The victim may face symptoms including nausea, fever, and pain. This past week, Backes was labeled as “day-to-day”, thinking that the injury was nothing major, but after seeing doctors, it seems that isn’t the case. Backes will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks but is expected to be out for at least three to four weeks.”

Backes, 33, who is entering the second year of a five year, $30 million contract deal, will not be back until mid-November it now seems. Last season, Backes’ first with the Bruins was a solid one. Filling in on a bottom-six position, Backes tallied 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) in 74 games played. Before his time in Boston, Backes was a member and captain of the St. Louis Blues. He spent 10 seasons in St. Louis. In 727 games as a Blue, Backes scored 206 goals and assisted on 254 more.

In the summer of 2016, he hit free agency and was signed by the Bruins. In Boston, Backes has acclimated nicely to a third line center-man role. He uses his big body and grit to get to the net mouth. He also brings incredible leadership skills to the Bruins’ locker room. The 6’3″, 221 pound forward was drafted 62nd overall by the Blues in the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In his career, Backes has skated in a grand total of 801 games, scoring 223 times and tallying 275 assists.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Boston Bruins announced Thursday that forward David Backes would miss the next 3-4 weeks due to diverticulitis.
