Want to address a lack of consistency on defense? Score nine goals every game.<\/p>\n<p>The opening night roster is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habseyesontheprize.com\/latest-news\/2017\/10\/2\/16392730\/montreal-canadiens-place-andreas-martinsen-byron-froese-on-waivers-send-charlie-lindgren-to-laval\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">close to being finalized<\/a>. <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carrda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel  Carr<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollape01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter  Holland<\/a><\/strong> cleared waivers over the weekend and were sent to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. Monday, <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/martian01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreas  Martinsen<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/froesby01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron  Froese<\/a> <\/strong>were waived. If they clear they will be sent to Laval on Tuesday. The team also sent <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccarmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael  McCarron<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Jakub Jerabek<\/strong>, and <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindgch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie  Lindgren<\/a><\/strong> down this week. <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/geliner01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric  Gelinas<\/a><\/strong> made the most of his PTO and was offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habseyesontheprize.com\/ahl-laval-rocket\/2017\/10\/1\/16393678\/eric-gelinas-signed-to-a-one-year-ahl-deal-by-the-laval-rocket\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a one-year contract<\/a>\u00a0with the Rocket.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens still have 24 players with the main club, 13 forwards, nine defencemen and two goalies. At this point it would appear that\u00a0<strong>David\u00a0Schlemko<\/strong> is likely to start the season on injured reserve. Once he is healthy though, the remaining question is whether <strong>Victor Mete<\/strong> makes the team. If so, one of <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/davidbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon  Davidson<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/streima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark  Streit<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>Joe Morrow\u00a0<\/strong>will be placed on waivers. At this time, it looks like Morrow is the odd man out.<\/p>\n<h2>Commentary<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jack Todd<\/strong> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/montreal-canadiens\/jack-todd-rise-of-the-hate-fan\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal\u00a0Gazette<\/a> takes on the rise of Habs &#8220;hate fans&#8221; in a piece that is sure to produce the very thing he criticizes. It is hard to disagree with him about nastiness in Habs nation. Does Todd really think that fans have no reason to be frustrated?<\/p>\n<p>Echoing an\u00a0analysis by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=389037&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yours truly<\/a>, the <strong>CBC<\/strong> published a piece by a staff writer suggesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/montreal-canadiens-forwards-hoping-to-rebound-2017-2018-1.4315783\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallagher is destined to rebound<\/a> in 2017. Having recovered from the hand\u00a0injuries\u00a0that he faced last year, it appears that he has a chance\u00a0to play on the top line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stu Cowan<\/strong> suggests Victor Mete has <a href=\"http:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/montreal-canadiens\/stu-cowan-victor-mete-should-have-a-spot-on-the-canadiens-blue-line\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earned and deserves a roster spot<\/a>. Downplaying the dangers of putting such a young player in such a high-stress situation, Cowan opines that if Mete makes the Habs this year, it is because <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc  Bergevin<\/a><\/strong> left the team with no other option.<\/p>\n<h2>Predictions and Previews<\/h2>\n<p class=\"r _gJs\"><strong>ESPN<\/strong> is out with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/20809917\/2017-18-nhl-season-preview-montreal-canadiens\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017-2018 season preview<\/a>. The preview predicts the Habs will finish\u00a0third in the Atlantic. Published a week ago, ESPN but includes a depth chart which suggests they haven&#8217;t\u00a0been watching the lines during the preseason.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, October 5, the Montreal Canadiens will open the NHL season in Buffalo against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Sabres<\/a>. Game time is 7 pm (EST).<\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens will stay on the road this week facing the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday, October 7.
