{"id":16689,"date":"2017-09-27T07:00:30","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T11:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=16689"},"modified":"2017-09-26T14:54:35","modified_gmt":"2017-09-26T18:54:35","slug":"who-will-be-the-first-nhl-coach-fired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/09\/27\/who-will-be-the-first-nhl-coach-fired\/","title":{"rendered":"NHL Hot Seat: Who Will Be The First NHL Coach Fired?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t usually get the answer to the \u2018who will be the first NHL coach fired\u2019 question until a few months into the season, but that isn\u2019t always the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While 10 of the 12 mid-season coaching changes over the past three years have taken place in December or later, there have also been some extremely early casualties. Columbus canned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richato01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Richards<\/a> seven games into the 2015-16 season, and Philadelphia handed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laviope01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Laviolette<\/a> his walking papers just three games into the 2013-14 campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to get fired before the calendar turns to November, a coach needs to be on pretty thin ice to begin with. At that point, all it takes is a slow start to the year for an owner or general manager to get an itchy trigger finger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five NHL coaches who either start the year on the hot seat or could find themselves in the firing line if things go south this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who Will Be The First NHL Coach Fired?<\/span><\/h1>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Bill Peters, Carolina<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peters\u2019 record through three seasons as the Hurricanes head coach is an unimpressive 101-103-42, with Carolina finishing no higher than sixth in the Metropolitan Division during that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, ownership saw enough in Peters\u2019 first two seasons in Raleigh to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nhl\/2016\/07\/27\/carolina-signs-coach-bill-peters-to-3-year-extension\/87608088\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hand him a three-year contract extension last spring.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe knew it wasn\u2019t going to be a quick turnaround,\u201d Peters told reporters when the extension was announced. \u201cIt takes time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time could run out on Peters this season, however, because general manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Francis<\/a><\/strong> has addressed some needs in an effort to end Carolina\u2019s eight-year playoff drought. After signing goalie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/darlisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Darling<\/a><\/strong> and veteran winger <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/williju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Williams<\/a><\/strong>, the &#8216;Canes are clearly <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/07\/14\/carolina-hurricanes-2018-stanley-cup-playoffs\/\" target=\"_self\">accelerating the rebuild<\/a>. If the Hurricanes get off to a slow start, there\u2019s potential for Peters to get blown out of town.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. John Hynes, New Jersey<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hynes is another coach whose <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/devils\/index.ssf\/2017\/04\/what_devils_thought_of_coach_john_hynes_in_his_2nd.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent struggles have been excused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the fact that he didn\u2019t have the best talent to work with. In two years behind the Devils bench, Hynes owns a record of 66-76-22 and New Jersey has finished seventh, then eighth in the Metropolitan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his first year in the Meadowlands, Hynes could at least point to the six-point improvement the Devils showed from the previous year. But any of that goodwill may have been lost during last year\u2019s horrible 28-40-14 showing, when New Jersey was 17 points behind the next-worst team in the division.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be no excuses for Hynes if the Devils aren\u2019t significantly better this year. With <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johanma03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Johansson<\/a><\/strong> and first-overall pick <strong>Nico Hischier<\/strong> in the lineup to give <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hallta01,hallta02&amp;search=Taylor+Hall&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Hall<\/a><\/strong> some badly-needed support up front, management has bolstered an attack that ranked third-last in the NHL in goals last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hynes may not need a playoff appearance this season to save his job, but the Devils need to at least contend for one. If they aren\u2019t showing signs of being able to do that early in the year, don\u2019t be surprised if we see the axe drop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Dave Hakstol, Philadelphia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Flyers are best known for being a goaltending meatgrinder, but they\u2019re also proving to be a graveyard for coaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excluding Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sherofr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Shero<\/a><\/strong>, the longest tenure for any coach in Philadelphia has been the four years put in by <strong>Mike Keenan<\/strong> in the mid-1980s. 15 coaches have walked the plank within a three-year span, and Hakstol just happens to be going into his third year in Philly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That isn\u2019t the only reason Hakstol could be shown the door, of course. After starting last season with a 19-10-3 record through 32 games, the Flyers were just 20-23-7 the rest of the way and missed the playoffs. Hakstol has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nhl\/flyers\/2017\/03\/23\/dave-isaac-dave-hakstol-not-fired-ron-hextall-philadelphia-flyers\/99538684\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yet to prove that he\u2019s capable of getting favorable line match-ups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the road in the NHL level, something he didn\u2019t have to do as much during a successful college career at the University of North Dakota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We already know <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/blogs\/sports\/flyers\/Fans-Flyers-Dave-Hakstol-USA-womens-hockey-equal-pay-sexism.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what Flyers fans think of Hakstol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after attacking the head coach last year when he supported the U.S. women\u2019s hockey team\u2019s fight for fair pay. Another mediocre campaign in Philadelphia could make management think the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Jeff Blashill, Detroit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blashill was already on the short list of NHL coaching candidates to get fired last year, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/index.ssf\/2017\/02\/odds_of_red_wings_jeff_blashil.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing odds as low as 8:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in mid-February. The black eye of being the first Red Wings coach to miss the playoffs in 25 years can\u2019t have helped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blashill survived the off-season, and not much is expected of Detroit in a rebuilding year. Still, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/sports\/nhl\/red-wings\/2017\/04\/13\/detroit-red-wings-ken-holland-jeff-blashill\/100392230\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit general manager <\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a> is on the hot seat himself<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and may end up throwing Blashill overboard in order to preserve his own job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the very least, Blashill needs to figure out how to get the Red Wings to play a more exciting brand of hockey as they enter their first year in Little Caesars Arena. Detroit ranked 23rd in the league in goals scored two years ago, then dipped to 26th last year. If we start seeing empty seats in a new rink, Blashill will probably be the scapegoat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quennjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Quenneville<\/a>, Chicago<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, it might seem ridiculous for the Blackhawks to consider firing the man who led them to three Stanley Cup championships this decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, plenty of Cup-winning coaches have been fired in the past, and every coach has his shelf life. Before last season started, who would have expected the Blues to fire Ken Hitchcock midway through the year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago is coming off back-to-back first round playoff exits, including an embarrassing sweep at the hands of eighth-seeded Nashville last spring. Many expect the Blackhawks to regress a bit this season after losing <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/darlisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Darling<\/a>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hossama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marian Hossa<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hjalmni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niklas Hjalmarsson<\/a><\/strong>. Quenneville didn\u2019t hide his <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyherald.com\/sports\/20170624\/chicago-blackhawks-quenneville-ponders-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disappointment about the Hjalmarsson trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he\u2019s butted heads with general manager Stan Bowman before. Speaking of Bowman, he <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/rosenblog\/ct-joel-quenneville-blackhawks-rosenbloom-20170430-column.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may have sent Quenneville a message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by firing assistant coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kitchmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Kitchen<\/a> &#8211; a close friend of Quenneville\u2019s &#8211; in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a career 413-203-83 record as Blackhawks coach, Quenneville has set the bar high in Chicago.
