During the summer, I will feature a team-by-team look at the top prospects in the NHL. I will follow the order of the first round of the NHL draft (as if there were no trades). You\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017-top-shelf-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can find all the articles here<\/a>. Since we had an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockeyprospects.com\/2016-nhl-entry-draft-headquarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extensive NHL Draft preview<\/a>, I will not be reviewing the players who were drafted this year. There have been no games since then, and my reports on them will not have changed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I will link you to those articles; as well as taking a look at prospects that were acquired before this year\u2019s draft; their progress, and their chances of making the 2017-18 roster.\u00a0<\/em><em>I will also bring you one sleeper pick \u2013 a player who was either drafted in the 4th-round or later; or an undrafted free agent signing who I pick as a dark horse to make the NHL. 50 NHL games played or being 25 years old is the cut-off for prospects. These are not hard or fast rules though, and I may make some exceptions depending on the circumstances.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>NHL Organizational Prospect Pool Rankings (31-21)<\/h1>\n<p>Note: If you click on the team name, you will get a link to a full prospect report on that team. \u00a0The snippets here are just a taste of the information available.<\/p>\n<h2>31.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/27\/tsp-pittsburgh-penguins-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spronda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sprong<\/a><\/strong> is a legitimate prospect and could even make the Penguins this year. However, he is the only solid skater in the Penguins pipeline. There are some longshots further down the system, but they are mostly projects or players with limited upside. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarrytr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tristan Jarry<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong>Filip Gustavsson<\/strong> are good goaltending prospects. However their value is mitigated by the fact that goaltending prospects are notoriously hard to project, and the fact that the Penguins already have an excelleng young starter in the crease. Good, but unproven goalie prospects just doing have as big of a value as solid skaters.<\/p>\n<h2>30.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/22\/tsp-chicago-blackhawks-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In <strong>Alex DeBrincat<\/strong>, the Blackhawks have a winger with high end potential. However, a lack of size raises questions about whether or not he will be able to reach that potential. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forslgu02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gustav Forsling<\/a><\/strong> is pushing for a spot on defence, but also faces questions about his size. <strong>Henri Jokiharju <\/strong>was a nice first round pick, but is a ways away from being NHL ready. Years of drafting late, combined with a number of prospects making the Hawks last year has really weakened this system.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>29.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/23\/tsp-washington-capitals-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Capitals<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ilya Samsonov<\/strong> is one of the best goaltending prospects in the world. However, there are questions about when he will be ready to leave the KHL. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vranaja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakub Vrana<\/a><\/strong> had an outstanding 2015-16 season. He wasn&#8217;t quite as good last year, but still remains a top prospect. <strong>Christian Djoos<\/strong>\u00a0has taken over as the team&#8217;s top defensive prospect.\u00a0<strong>Madison Bowey<\/strong> was once thought of as a sure-fire NHL but has seen has value slip. They have had a tendency to trade away picks and prospects in recent years.<\/p>\n<h2>28.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/13\/tsp-san-jose-sharks-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose Sharks<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Sharks will start to see some massive turnover upfront over the next few seasons. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marlepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Marleau<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is gone and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thornjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Thornton<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is not getting any younger. It could be Timo-time this year as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/meierti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timo Meier<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is close to NHL ready. <strong>Danny O&#8217;Regan<\/strong> will also fight for a spot. First rounder\u00a0<strong>Josh Norris<\/strong>\u00a0will need some time. On defence the Sharks hope that <strong>Joakim Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>can continue to progress and make an NHL impact. The system is really weak beyond him at the back end. They also lack a top notch goalie prospect.<\/p>\n<h2>27.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/21\/tsp-montreal-canadiens-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montreal Canadiens<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Canadiens traded away top prospect <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sergami01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikhail Sergachev<\/a><\/strong> this summer. While there is no stud on the blue line, the depth there is still decent with <strong>Noah Juulsen<\/strong>, <strong>Victor Mete<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lernobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Lernout<\/a><\/strong>, and four picks from the 2017 NHL Draft. Upfront some work needs to be done. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hudonch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Hudon<\/a><\/strong> will push for a spot on the big club. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/scherni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Scherbak<\/a><\/strong> improved in his second AHL season, but must do even more in his third.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/14\/ryan-poehling-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-16\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Ryan Poehling<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Joni Ikonen<\/strong>\u00a0were nice picks this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens deepest position is in goal. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindgch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Lindgren<\/a><\/strong> is one of the AHL&#8217;s best goalies, and <strong>Michael McNiven<\/strong> was the CHL goalie of the year. Falling down the depth chart is\u00a0<strong>Zach Fucale<\/strong>. He must have a big season this year. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Hayden Hawkey<\/strong> also had a strong season in the college ranks. While the Habs have some of the best goalie depth of any organization, goalie prospects remain unpredictable and do not carry the same value as forwards and defencemen.<\/p>\n<h2>26.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/07\/tsp-winnipeg-jets-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winnipeg Jets<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/connoky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Connor<\/a><\/strong> heads to training camp, on the heels of his impressive AHL performance and looking to crack the lineup on a full-time basis. The Jets got another strong forward with <strong>Kristian Vesalainen\u00a0<\/strong>in the first round of the draft. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosloja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Roslovic<\/a> had a strong first season with the Manitoba Moose. While the forward group remains strong, the Jets could use help on the blue line. Newly signed\u00a0<strong>Tucker Poolman<\/strong> is their top ranked defenceman. Finnish defenceman\u00a0<strong>Sami Niku<\/strong> also has potential. In goal, they would like to see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/comrier01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Comrie<\/a><\/strong> take a step forward in his development.<\/p>\n<h2>25.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/16\/tsp-new-york-rangers-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">New York Rangers<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Upfront the Rangers are strong. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/buchnpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Buchnevich<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>still qualifies as a prospect, and the team added <strong>Lias Andersson<\/strong> and<strong> Filip Chytil<\/strong> in the first round of this year&#8217;s draft. In goal,\u00a0<strong>Igor Shestyorkin<\/strong>\u00a0plays an unorthodox style, but is one of the top goalie prospects in the world. Unfortunately, he is signed in the KHL through the 2019-20 season. The Rangers hope that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/deangan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony DeAngelo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0makes the jump to NHL contributor on the blue line, while <strong>Sean Day\u00a0<\/strong>will continue his development.<\/p>\n<h2>24.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/03\/tsp-los-angeles-kings-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Los Angeles Kings<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The Kings might have got the NHL Draft&#8217;s biggest steal when <strong>Gabriel Vilardi <\/strong>slipped to 11th overall. He adds a true high end prospect to their group. While he might not crack the roster this year, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kempead01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Kempe<\/a><\/strong> is pretty close to NHL ready, and should seriously challenge for a job in training camp. The Kings also added to their forward group with a strong second round pick in <strong>Jaret Anderson-Dolan<\/strong>.\u00a0On defence, <strong>Kale Clague<\/strong> is one of the WHL&#8217;s best defencemen. The Kings signed a top goalie prospect in Notre Dames Cal Peterson, who refused to sign with the Buffalo Sabres.<\/p>\n<h2>23.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/17\/tsp-edmonton-oilers-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmonton Oilers<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Edmonton Oilers have an excellent young team, having graduated a number of top prospects in recent years. However the system is now a little thin. In <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/puljuje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse Puljujarvi<\/a><\/strong>, they still have one of the best prospects in all of hockey, and he saves them from finishing even lower in the rankings. They also made a solid first round selection with <strong>Kailer Yamamoto<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>These two gives the team strong wing depth to pair with their excellent young centres in the future. On defence ,they will look for <strong>Ethan Bear\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Caleb Jones\u00a0<\/strong>to continue to take steps forward. They start their pro careers this season. Goaltender <strong>Laurent Broissoit\u00a0<\/strong>may be ready to be an NHL back-up.<\/p>\n<h2>22.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/02\/tsp-florida-panthers-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida Panthers<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Getting <strong>Owen Tippett <\/strong>was a real coup for the Florida Panthers on Draft Day. He slipped lower than expected. Tippett gives the team a sniper with high end potential. Centre <strong>Henrik Borgstrom\u00a0<\/strong>returns to college after an excellent freshman season. He won the National Championship with the University of Denver. Winger\u00a0<strong>Adam Mascherin <\/strong>also improved his stock last year with a strong OHL campaign. Add in <strong>Jayce Hawryluk<\/strong>\u00a0and the forwards have good potential. However the defence group is thin beyond <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccosia01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian McCoshen<\/a><\/strong>. The Panthers are hoping <strong>Samuel Montembault<\/strong> can make the jump from the QMJHL to AHL successfully, in goal.<\/p>\n<h2>21.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/08\/01\/tsp-detroit-red-wings-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Red Wings<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Wings made a curious first round pick with\u00a0<strong>Michael Rasmussen<\/strong>. He scored a lot of points on the power play last season, but questions surround his five on five production. Their top prospect is <strong>Evgeni Svechnikov<\/strong>.\u00a0He\u00a0has elite level skill. It will be up to the Wings development staff to make sure he reaches his high potential.<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertuty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Bertuzzi<\/a> <\/strong>was the best prospect on the AHL Champion Grand Rapids team.\u00a0The Wings have <strong>Filip Hronek<\/strong> on the blue line. He projects as a potential second pair defender. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Dennis Cholowski\u00a0<\/strong>took a little longer to adjust to the college game than many hoped. He will need to take a step up this year. The Wings have depth in goal with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coreaja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jared Coreau<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/05\/26\/keith-petruzzelli-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-57\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Petruzelli<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Matej Machovsky<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Filip Larsson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/09\/20\/nhl-organizational-prospect-pool-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to check out the next ten teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the 2017 edition of \u201cTop Shelf Prospects\u201d.
