{"id":1474,"date":"2016-09-19T22:57:25","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T02:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2016-09-23T11:33:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T15:33:33","slug":"aaron-ekblad-mild-concussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2016\/09\/19\/aaron-ekblad-mild-concussion\/","title":{"rendered":"Aaron Ekblad Out With &#8220;Mild&#8221; Concussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was announced early Monday evening that <strong>Team North America<\/strong> and <strong>Florida Panthers<\/strong>&#8216; defenceman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekblaaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Ekblad<\/a><\/strong> would not be playing Team North America&#8217;s <strong>World Cup of Hockey<\/strong> match-up against <strong>Team Russia<\/strong>. \u00a0When the news first broke, Ekblad was described as having an\u00a0&#8220;upper-body&#8221; injury and that was that, but it has been revealed that he suffered a minor concussion. \u00a0The injury occurred in Sunday&#8217;s game in which Team North America squared off against <strong>Team Finland<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Toronto Maple Leafs<\/strong> and Finnish forward <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/komarle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Komarov<\/a><\/strong> shoved Ekblad, sending him into the boards.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TeamNA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#TeamNA<\/a> defenceman Aaron Ekblad will not dress tonight due to an upper body injury. Jacob Trouba draws into the lineup. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WCH2016?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#WCH2016<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Team North America (@TeamNA_WCH) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamNA_WCH\/status\/778011525965606912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 19, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In place of Ekblad, Team North America put <strong>Winnipeg Jets<\/strong> defenceman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/troubja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Trouba<\/a><\/strong> in on the blue line. \u00a0The loss of Ekblad is costly for the young and exciting North American squad. \u00a0Ekblad was playing some shutdown defence, logging over 23 minutes, three hits, and a blocked shot in Sunday&#8217;s 4-1 victory over Finland. \u00a0Trouba, however, is a fine replacement, being able to play on both the power-play and penalty kill.<\/p>\n<p>Via <strong>Sportsnet&#8217;s<\/strong> Chris Johnston, Team North America General Manager <strong>Peter Chiarelli<\/strong> has labeled Aaron Ekblad as &#8220;day-to-day&#8221;. \u00a0It is still unaware, however, if Ekblad will return to the tournament or head back to Florida to meet with Panthers team doctors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Aaron Ekblad is &quot;day-to-day,&quot; Team North America GM Peter Chiarelli says on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sportsnet?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Sportsnet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/reporterchris\/status\/778051933063917569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 20, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This past season in Florida, the 20 year old defenceman tallied 15 goals and 21 assists in 78 total games played and was considered one of the Panthers top defenceman, averaging 21:41 of ice time per game. \u00a0Ekblad won the <strong>Calder Memorial Trophy<\/strong> in 2014-2015 as the <strong>National Hockey League&#8217;s<\/strong> top rookie. \u00a0This past season, he finished 16th in <strong>Norris Trophy<\/strong> voting as the League&#8217;s top defenceman. \u00a0At the <strong>2015 World Championships<\/strong>, Ekblad was a member of <strong>Team Canada<\/strong>, where he scored four goals and addrd three assists in Canada&#8217;s 10-0 championship winning run.
