This past season he played all 82 games for them. He set a career high in assists with 18 and in points with 20 while playing with Jaccob Slavin who was also extended by the Hurricanes recently. He has six goals and 36 points overall in 151 NHL games through his first two seasons in the league.

Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis spoke about Brett Pesce after the contract was announced and he said (via the team website) that, “Brett took another big step forward last season. He plays a smart defensive game and has good ability to move the puck and contribute offensively. We plan for him to be a part of the Hurricanes’ defensive corps for a long time.”

Pesce was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and didn’t need long to make his debut as he made it early during the 2015-16 season. Last season, he had 54.1% Corsi rating at even strength. With Faulk, Slavin, and Pesce all locked up, Carolina will likely turn their attention to Noah Hanifin who also has only one year left on his deal.

Pesce also had the third highest Relative Corsi-For percentage on the Hurricanes roster, with a 4.01. This was third to only Teuvo Teravainen (5.20) and Jordan Staal (6.49) This points to his effectiveness, and also shows just how smart of a deal this was by Francis and the Hurricanes.

This deal leaves Carolina with approximately $14 million in cap space with no remaining free agents on the roster.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

Defenseman Brett Pesce has signed a six-year extension with the Carolina Hurricanes today with an AAV of $4.025M per season and a total of $24.15M.
