Addison was awarded a one year contract worth $825k. After three rocky seasons with the Wild, the new agreement will carry the young defensemen through season 2023-24. The combined factors of the defenceman\u2019s power play ability, his potential for growth, and the Wild&#8217;s salary cap limitations are the stars that aligned for the contract to happen.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Minnesota Wild Grant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/addisca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calen Addison<\/a> Contract of Redemption<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Minnesota Wild Give Calen Addison Second Chance<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early in the 2022-23 season, Addison made a positive impact on a struggling Wild power play unit. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/04\/28\/calen-addison-scouting-report-2018-nhl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\">defensemen\u2019s vision<\/a> and ability to diagnose the power play helped elevate the Wild to ninth in the league in power play percentage. Whilst on the power play unit, Addison became one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2023\/02\/15\/wild-make-calen-addison-healthy-scratch-despite-prowess-on-power-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">league&#8217;s leaders in rookie scoring<\/a>. In 62 games, Addison registered 29 points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undoubtedly, Addison is a skilled and gifted offensive defenceman. However, Addison spent a good second half of the season benched. With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/addisca01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plus\/minus rating of -17<\/a>, the Wild believed the rookie to be a defensive liability. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commenting on Addison\u2019s success in the power play, Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/evasode01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dean Evason<\/a> told the media the <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4207241\/2023\/02\/16\/minnesota-wild-trades-russo-avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cleague is too hard to just be a specialist.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gueribi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Guerin<\/a> showed how little faith he had in Addison when he acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klingjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Klingberg<\/a> from the Anaheim Ducks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/john-klingberg-trade-anaheim\/\" target=\"_self\">trade deadline<\/a>. Klingberg essentially replaced Addison for the rest of the season thereafter. Klingberg was also a master on the power play unit. But, proved to be a sore spot on the Wilds&#8217; blue line with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klingjo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plus\/minus rating of -25<\/a> in season 2022-23.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cap-Strapped Wild Invest in Youth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This offseason, Minnesota has minimal room to make moves. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parisza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Parise<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/suterry01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Suter<\/a> buyouts effective until 2025-2026, the cap-strapped Wild needs young and inexpensive players like Addison. With such little cap space left, the Wild were unable to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/06\/09\/minnesota-wild-matt-dumba-contract-expiring\/\" target=\"_self\">re-sign veteran defenders<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dumbama01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Dumba<\/a>, and Klingberg. Thus, Addison may have been the only option for Minnesota.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, this contract can be the start of a new beginning for the Wild and Addison. With a new Calen Addison contract official, Minnesota has revealed their belief in the defenceman\u2019s potential for growth. The rookie has shown his dedication to the franchise by agreeing to remain in the Twin Cities during the offseason and work with the team\u2019s trainers.
