Even though Montreal is in rebuild mode, Caufield serves as a building block. He joins captain Nick Suzuki as the cornerstone piece for the resurgence of Montreal hockey. Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton, and Martin St Louis have this team headed in the right direction. This is a great place to start.

Caufield Only Getting Better

The Cole Caufield contract works for this team. It was an ugly start to his young career, but that was hardly his fault. All it took was a coaching change and Caufield looked like a new player. Once St Louis took charge, Caufield began to look like the sniper he was at the University of Wisconsin. This past season saw him take bigger strides in his game. Caufield went on to score 26 goals and have 36 points in 46 games. Unfortunately, he would undergo shoulder surgery that would end his season. However, there is no reason to think that he cannot score 50 goals in this league. He will only get better and the contract shows they believe in him as well.

The Future Is Bright

Montreal has a very bright future ahead of them. The Cole Caufield contract points to a bright future. In addition to Nick Suzuki, a rejuvenated Kirby Dach is around as well as a talented prospect pool. This is a team that can form a dangerous young core much like the Buffalo Sabres and raise from the ashes. Overall, this is a great deal and the sky is the limit for Caufield.

Main Photo: David Kirouac-USA TODAY Sports

Just like many other teams, the Montreal Canadiens have joined the pack.
