Conroy replaces Brad Treliving as the club’s general manager, who parted ways with the club at the end of the regular season. The former NHLer scored 97 goals and added 211 assists over 507 games with the Flames. Conroy also logged seven goals and 15 assists over 45 career playoff games in Calgary.

The 51-year-old was chosen from a reported list of 40 different candidates for the job. Conroy served a number of roles with the club, including the assistant general manager under Treliving. Don Maloney is the Flames’ President of Hockey Operations and was serving as the interim general manager.

What Craig Conroy as General Manager Means

This could mean that Jarome Iginla will return to the club in some form. Iginla has been coaching at the RINK Hockey Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia. The former Flames standout openly rooted for Conroy to get the Calgary GM job. Could Iginla be in line to be a coach in the Flames organization at some point?

Calgary is looking to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out this season. There were a lot of expectations for the Flames, but the organization fell short of those. Treliving left the organization and head coach Darryl Sutter was fired. One of Conroy’s first orders of business will be to find a new bench boss. However, that search can now pick up steam with Conroy now installed as the team’s general manager.

Main photo by: Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Calgary Flames have hired a new general manager on Sunday.
