The Devils may have looked sluggish after a seven-game battle with the New York Rangers. Carolina figured out Akira Schmid early in the series-opener. New Jersey had trouble getting pucks on the net in the opener until later in the game The Devils never were able to sustain attacks and use their depth. New Jersey also missed Timo Meier in the series-opener after his hit from Jacob Trouba. The Devils are talented and can sustain pressure when playing their best. However, the Hurricanes do a great job with their defensive structure.

Frederik Andersen should get the call once again in net for Carolina. The Hurricanes didn’t look like they’d been off for a few days in Game 1. Carolina’s system under head coach Rod Brind’Amour was able to completely stifle any attacking pressure that New Jersey had. Seth Jarvis has started to heat up in recent games for the Hurricanes. It always seems that the Canes get goals from any part of the lineup despite forward injuries. Plus, Carolina is very good at sustaining a lead.

New Jersey will need a much better start if it wants to even up the series. Carolina is solid at home and should take the series lead back to the Newark.

Prediction: Hurricanes win 3-1.

Enjoy tonight’s game and there’s only for Saturday night as well.

Main photo by: James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Each day, Last Word on Hockey takes a look at the games that are happening and gives our predictions for each one, breaking down head-to-head and other factors that may play in.
