The West as a whole was relatively quiet, and the Pacific division was no exception. With most teams being sellers rather than buyers, the long-term impacts remain to be seen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examining the Pacific Division Deadline Moves\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaheim Ducks\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ducks pulled off a big move right at the wire. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/john-klingberg-trade-anaheim\/\" target=\"_self\">Minutes before the deadline closed<\/a>, they completed a trade to send veteran defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klingjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Klingberg. He goes to the <\/a>Wild in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round pick. Anaheim is also retaining 50% of Klingberg&#8217;s salary. Currently bottom of the division, the Ducks are gearing up for a larger rebuild. They will likely try to move bigger pieces like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/henriad01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Henrique<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shattke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Shattenkirk<\/a> when free agency opens this summer. Unloading Klingberg&#8217;s contract for any assets is a win for Anaheim. It allows them to start building a framework around young stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zegratr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Zegras<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/terrytr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Terry<\/a>, and Mason McTavish. Bringing in Penguins winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcginbr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock McGinn<\/a> in exchange for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kulikdm01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dmitry Kulikov<\/a> only reinforces the idea that the Ducks are building from the ground up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: B-<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calgary Flames<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our next team for the Pacific Division Trade Deadline is Calgary. The Flames are another team that was exceptionally quiet at the deadline. After making a few big offseason moves, they were expected to put up more of a fight in the division. However, the overall effect has been underwhelming, placing them fifth in the division and currently outside of playoff contention. The Flames have all the pieces to be a great team, they just haven\u2019t quite been able to put the puzzle together. With more consistent production from players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mangian01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Mangiapane<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huberjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Huberdeau<\/a>, they could slip into a wild-card spot ahead of a Winnipeg Jets team that has been struggling. While the market may have been ripe for the Flames to capitalize on returns (a la Nashville and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jeannta01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanner Jeannot<\/a>), they\u2019re not entirely out of the playoff picture. With the team they have in front of them, making <a href=\"https:\/\/flamesnation.ca\/news\/the-calgary-flames-are-in-perfect-position-to-sell-assets-given-recent-nhl-trades\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">holding at the deadline not a bad decision<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: B-<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmonton Oilers\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oilers made a surprise move ahead of the deadline. by <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/28\/predators-trade-mattias-ekholm-to-edmonton-oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">acquiring<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekholma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattias Ekholm<\/a> from the Nashville Predators in exchange for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barrity01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyson Barrie<\/a>, Reid Schaefer, and first- and fourth-round picks this summer. They also added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bjugsni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Bjugstad<\/a> from the Arizona Coyotes in a late move Thursday. Ekholm adds another layer of protection behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid. He also provides <\/a>a veteran presence on a defensive core that has struggled to be able to support their star. Their third pairing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brobeph01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip Broberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kulakbr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Kulak<\/a> still leaves something to be desired, but adding Ekholm in on the second pair takes some of the pressure off of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nurseda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Nurse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cecico01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Ceci. <\/a>Ekholm is a solid trade that clearly addresses the biggest need that the Oilers have heading into the postseason. The Oilers were <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/28\/edmonton-oilers-jesse-puljujarvi-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">also able to unload<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/puljuje01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse Puljujarvi<\/a> to Carolina. Puljujarvi is a player with an immense potential upside, but his career has struggled in Edmonton, making it difficult for the Oilers to justify keeping him around. While the Oilers didn&#8217;t make the flashiest moves, they were able to pinpoint their weaknesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: A-\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Kings\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Los Angeles Kings moved long-time goaltender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quickjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Quick<\/a> to the Columbus Blue Jackets. They acquired defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gavrivl01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vladislav Gavrikov<\/a> and goaltender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/korpijo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joonas Korpisalo<\/a> in return. The trade seems like the ideal situation for the Kings. With Quick having his worst year ever and a save percentage of .876, the Kings replace a lacklustre performance in Korpisalo. Los Angeles did add Gavrikov to bolster the back end. The move was shocking, as Quick has been a pillar of the Kings since being drafted by them 16 years ago. However, with news of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/jonathan-quick-traded-again\/\" target=\"_self\">Quick\u2019s trade<\/a> to divisional rival Vegas Golden Knights, it may be a move they come to regret. The Kings also sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiebr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Lemieux<\/a> to Philadelphia in exchange for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/macewza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack MacEwen<\/a>, meant to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/zack-macewen-trade-flyers-kings-brendan-lemieux\/\" target=\"_self\">increase the physical presence<\/a> of the Kings&#8217; fourth line. Los Angeles effectively addressed their biggest weakness, even though the move came at a high personal price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: A-\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose Sharks\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Pacific division overall was notably short of blockbuster trades, the San Jose Sharks hold the distinction of perhaps the most high-profile trade of the entire deadline. Rumours had been swirling around forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/meierti01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timo Meier<\/a> for months, and the Sharks finally <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/26\/timo-meier-trade-sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">sealed the deal. They sent <\/a>\u00a0the 26-year-old to New Jersey. They received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsan01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreas Johnsson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zettefa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fabian Zetterlund<\/a>, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Nikita Okhotiuk, and two picks in return. It has not been a secret that the Sharks are looking to sell, and the trade was no surprise to Meier himself or the fanbase. Through this trade, the Sharks were able to unload a player who cost more than they can afford, and they get a few young players with potential from New Jersey.\u00a0 San Jose also made a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/pittsburgh-penguins-nick-bonino-trade-back\/\" target=\"_self\">late move<\/a> to flip centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boninni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Bonino<\/a> to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 7th-round pick, opening up another spot in their bottom six. San Jose was hoping to acquire a bigger talent from the Devils, but made the most of the return and set themselves up for success in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: A\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Kraken\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kraken\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/17\/seattle-kraken-goaltending-woes-flying-under-the-radar\/\" target=\"_self\">biggest need is goaltending<\/a>. They have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesma02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grubaph01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philipp Grubauer<\/a> as their tandem currently, and neither player is posting a save percentage above .895. It\u2019s clearly the largest weakness for a Seattle team that has a lot of potential. However, the Kraken did not make a move to address it. At some point, push is going to come to shove, and the Kraken will need to get a solid goalie on board. But until then, they have a strong team without a ton of holes. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/insider\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/35755042\/nhl-trade-tiers-best-forwards-defensemen-goalies-move\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">targets here<\/a> should have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/talboca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Talbot<\/a> of the Senators and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vejmeka01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karel Vejmelka<\/a> of the Coyotes, but the return price may have been too high for the Kraken to make a deal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: C\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vancouver Canucks\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vancouver Canucks had two big names up on the trade board before the deadline. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boesebr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock Boeser<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/millejt01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.T. Miller<\/a> were names that had been tossed around the rumour mill for weeks prior to the deadline. The Canucks made a few smaller moves, trading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schenlu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Schenn<\/a> to Toronto <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/28\/vancouver-canucks-trade-luke-schenn\/\" target=\"_self\">for a third-round pick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lazarcu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curtis Lazar<\/a> to New Jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/devils-curtis-lazar-trade-canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">for a fourth-round pick.<\/a> However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/02\/filip-hronek-trade-fulfills-vancouver-canucks-need\/\" target=\"_self\">only big move<\/a> was acquiring defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hronefi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Filip Hronek<\/a> from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for first- and second-round picks. For the Canucks, who are solidly in the middle of a rebuild, trading away valuable front-end picks for a 25-year-old having a career year seems ridiculous. However, the Canucks are weak on the right side, and were able to grab a solid young player with a big upside. It\u2019s a risky gamble, and one the Canucks are desperately hoping pays off. They recoup some of the loss with middling picks in the Schenn and Lazar trades, but will still be hoping that Hronek lives up to the hype.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade: C-\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegas Golden Knights\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s one thing to know about Vegas, it\u2019s that they are going to make a splashy move. This year, it\u2019s trading for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/03\/jonathan-quick-traded-again\/\" target=\"_self\">former LA Kings goaltender<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quickjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Quick<\/a>, sending AHL talent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hutchmi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Hutchinson<\/a> and a seventh-round pick to Columbus. They also made a smaller move, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/03\/01\/penguins-make-teddy-blueger-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">acquiring centre<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bluegte01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-03_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teddy Blueger<\/a> from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vegas is lacking in scoring, especially on the wing.
