With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auston Matthews<\/a> one year away from free agency, a big piece of the puzzle could be playing elsewhere soon. The Maple Leafs should target any number of players before next month&#8217;s NHL trade deadline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the trade deadline approaching, the pressure on general manager Kyle Dubas is enormous. He needs to send this group of players a message that the organization is willing to do whatever it takes to help them win.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/timo-meier-stays-atop-new-nhl-trade-deadline-trade-bait-board-but-for-how-long-1.1917520\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">While Timo Meier and Jakob Chychrun are at the top of everyone\u2019s wish list<\/a>, there are a number of other players available the Maple Leafs could use in the playoffs.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here are some pending unrestricted free agents the Maple Leafs should target before the March 3 trade deadline.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Who The Maple Leafs Should Target At The Trade Deadline\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/toewsjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Toews<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can talk about second line wingers and depth defencemen, but the Leafs need someone who has been there, done that. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/08\/16\/nhl-rumours-pair-of-chicago-blackhawks-could-be-on-the-move\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks veteran Jonathan Toews fits the bill<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not only has he won three Stanley Cups, but he was the captain of those teams. The 34-year-old also won the Conn Smythe Trophy with their first title in 2010.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yes that was 13 years ago, but he would not play as prominent a role on the ice. He could capably fill the third line centre position.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More importantly, his playoff experience and success would pay huge dividends. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/travis-yost-examining-the-trade-landscape-for-jonathan-toews-and-patrick-kane-1.1912986\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">His $10.5 million cap hit would mean some existing contracts would have to be dealt to make the money work.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertuty01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Bertuzzi<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertuty01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Bertuzzi<\/a> could be <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/10\/nhl-rumours-detroit-red-wings-tyler-bertuzzi-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">the answer as the second line left winger<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tavarjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Tavares<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nylanwi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Nylander<\/a>. Much like the first line left winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/buntimi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Bunting<\/a>, the Sudbury, Ontario native is an agitator with some offensive skill. He has struggled this season, but scored 30 goals last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 27-year-old is in his fifth full season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> and has yet to make the playoffs. Some may say he wouldn\u2019t know what to expect in the post-season, but his hunger for playoff success would outweigh that concern. He doesn\u2019t play scared and enjoys playoff-style hockey.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Being from Ontario and playing junior with the OHL\u2019s Guelph Storm, he\u2019s familiar with the market. He would like nothing better than to help his local team growing up win a Stanley Cup.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The $4.75 million cap hit would likely mean a prospect heading to Detroit to complete the deal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domima01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Domi<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If the price for Bertuzzi is too steep, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domima01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Domi<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/27\/max-domi-trade-possibility\/\" target=\"_self\">a good second option as a trade deadline target<\/a>. The Chicago Blackhawks winger is familiar with Maple Leafs fans, who cheered on his father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domiti01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tie Domi<\/a> at old Maple Leaf Gardens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Domi was drafted 12th overall by the Phoenix (now Arizona) Coyotes in 2013 but never really played with the talent the Maple Leafs possess. He has played in Arizona, Columbus, Montreal and Chicago when those franchises lacked talent and struggled to make the playoffs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Playing with Tavares and Nylander would put a jump in his step and an opportunity to display the offensive skills. With his father watching every night, he would not want to disappoint.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His $3 million cap hit is manageable with just six weeks left on the schedule after the trade deadline.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/soucyca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carson Soucy<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/soucyca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carson Soucy<\/a> is a solid top-6 defenceman who could slide into a regular rotation on the bottom end of the Leafs blue line corps.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riellmo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Rielly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/broditj01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Brodie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollju01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Holl<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/giordma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Giordano<\/a> provide a trusted top four, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandira01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rasmus Sandin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/liljeti01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timothy Liljegren<\/a> are going into uncharted waters in the playoffs. Soucy has playoff experience with the Minnesota Wild, which would provide stability for the younger players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The native of Viking, Alberta (home of the famous Sutter family) has been a plus player throughout his career with the Wild and Seattle Kraken. Also, he would be an upgrade on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/timmico01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conor Timmins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bennjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordie Benn<\/a> on the depth chart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At 28, he presents an opportunity for the Maple Leafs to re-sign him over the summer. His $2.75 million cap hit should not be an issue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schenlu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Schenn<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If Soucy is not an option before the deadline, veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schenlu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Schenn<\/a> of the Vancouver Canucks is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/02\/02\/nhl-rumours-canucks-luke-schenn-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">a logical trade deadline target at little cost<\/a>. The 33-year-old was drafted fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2008 and played his first four NHL seasons in Toronto. Imagine coming back to win a Stanley Cup with the team that drafted you 15 years earlier?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Schenn won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> and provides that winning pedigree the team needs. The fact the Lightning are the Leafs\u2019 likely first opponent make his acquisition that much more enticing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Saskatoon native played a supporting on those teams and could form a platoon system with fellow veteran Giordano in what hopes to be a long, grueling playoff run. He also adds a right-shot and some toughness that has been missing since the loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/muzzija01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Muzzin<\/a> due to injury.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/vancouver-canucks-unsure-on-trading-pending-ufa-luke-schenn-at-nhl-trade-deadline-1.1917464\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he has been a plus player on a struggling Vancouver Canucks team<\/a>. He is great value with a cap hit of just $875,000\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nyquigu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gustav Nyquist<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nyquigu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-02-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gustav Nyquist<\/a> is one season removed from a 53-pont season. He could add some scoring to the bottom six group of forwards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 33-year-old veteran is attractive for another reason. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/11\/04\/columbus-blue-jackets-gustav-nyquist-sidelined\/\" target=\"_self\">He is currently out with a shoulder injury<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> placed him on Long Term Injured Reserve until the end of the season. That means his cap hit is zero; essentially a free player.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/injured-columbus-blue-jackets-f-gustav-nyquist-could-still-be-traded-ahead-of-deadline-1.1914674\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The asking price should be minimal<\/a>, which is good news for a team that is always near the salary cap limit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trade deadline deals don\u2019t guarantee success in the playoffs. As former general manager Brian Burke says, many teams make trades at the deadline every year, but only one team wins the Stanley Cup. However, the Maple Leafs should possess a sense of urgency this season and these trade deadline targets should be on their radar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The reality is that teams usually overpay for the asset they feel will make a difference. For the Maple Leafs, prospects and draft picks must be on the table. You can\u2019t win the jackpot if you don\u2019t go all in.
