However, in hockey, this task sometimes seems impossible. Generational talents like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> have locked up top spots for decades, seemingly untouchable in their excellence. However, this NHL season seems to have taken that personally. Both franchise and league records are falling consistently, with someone making history seemingly every night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2022-23 NHL Season Has Multiple Records Broken<\/h2>\n<h3>Team Records Falling<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/02\/rangers-alexis-lafreniere-development\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/02\/nhl-predictions-jan-2-penguins-bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> broke records with win streaks this season, with the Devils tying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/sports\/articles\/2022-11-22\/devils-are-on-a-franchise-record-13-game-winning-streak#:~:text=The%20Devils&#039;%20other%2013%2Dgame,the%20Pittsburgh%20Penguins%20in%201993.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">franchise record at 13 games<\/a>, and Boston breaking an NHL record for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/boston\/bruins\/bruins-golden-knights-takeaways-vegas-ends-bostons-home-win-streak#:~:text=The%20Bruins%20broke%20the%20league,end%20to%20Boston&#039;s%20historic%20run.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">longest home win streak to start the season at 14<\/a>. The Devils also set a new NHL record with 13 wins in December. The Devils currently sit second in the Metropolitan division with a 22-11-2 record and the Bruins leading the Atlantic at 28-4-3. You could argue that both the Devils&#8217; and Bruins\u2019 win streaks were the result of scheduling, with eight of the Bruins\u2019 14 wins and seven of the Devils\u2019 13 coming against teams sitting outside of the playoffs. However, maintaining the level of production that both teams did over that streak remains impressive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Individual Efforts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual players have also taken it upon themselves to shatter record after record. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesseph01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Kessel<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/02\/nhl-predictions-january-2-including-vegas-colorado\/\" target=\"_self\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> broke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yandlke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Yandle<\/a>\u2019s Iron Man record on October 25th, playing in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nhl\/news\/phil-kessel-ironman-streak-nhl-record-against-all-time-leaders-nfl-mlb-nba\/r7up3svoh56y3trhbefrvt1b\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">990th consecutive game<\/a>. Kessel has since extended the record, playing in his 1,013th game on December 13 against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. Kessel hasn\u2019t missed a game since 2009 and is well on his way to an unbreakable record of his own. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja03,hugheja02&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Hughes<\/a> of the New Jersey Devils recorded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/devils-jack-hughes-sets-modern-nhl-shift-record-in-heroic-effort\/#:~:text=There&#039;s%20putting%20the%20team%20on,against%20the%20New%20York%20Islanders.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">longest shift in NHL history<\/a>, as the forward was on the ice for 6:02 at the end of the Devils&#8217; loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> on December 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skaters have also been breaking franchise records. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Marner<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/12\/23\/five-reasons-why-the-maple-leafs-will-win-the-stanley-cup-this-year\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> had a <a href=\"https:\/\/records.nhl.com\/records\/skater-records\/scoring-streaks\/longest-consecutive-point-streak\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">23-game consecutive point streak<\/a>, breaking Daryl Sitler\u2019s 1978 franchise record of 18 straight games. Marner was also closer to breaking Gretzky\u2019s league record of points in 51 consecutive games than anyone has been since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanepa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Kane<\/a> went on a 26-game streak in 2015. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompta01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2022-12-30_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tage Thompson<\/a> broke a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/01\/01\/nhl-predictions-january-1-including-sabres-senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> record when he put up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/35207265\/sabres-tage-thompson-ties-team-record-5-goals-vs-columbus\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five points in one period<\/a> against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> and became only the second American player to score five goals in one game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"BcH4mwK5TC9U1DckSs747A\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1245347066\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'BcH4mwK5TC9U1DckSs747A',sig:'YfYcLYeOa_OZ1HMNsXMxD8FfcwewPo-6UlxwcUbpUak=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1245347066',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Ovechkin and the &#8220;Great One&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No talk of records in the NHL would be complete without discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>. Ovechkin has been relentless in pursuing some of the sport&#8217;s most \u201cunbreakable\u201d records. Ovechkin scored two goals against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> on November 29th to score <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/ovechkin-breaks-nhl-road-goals-record-as-capitals-down-canucks\/#:~:text=Ovechkin%20has%20scored%20403%20of%20his%20793%20career%20goals%20away%20from%20home.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">403 road goals<\/a>, topping the \u201cGreat One\u201d Wayne Gretzky\u2019s record of 402 goals. He also gained on Gretzky\u2019s overall goal record, becoming only the third player in league history to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/capitals-alex-ovechkin-scores-800th-nhl-goal\/c-338763136\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surpass 800 career goals<\/a> with a hat-trick against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> on December 13. And, of course, he passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> on December 23 with two goals against the Winnipeg Jets to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2022\/12\/23\/alex-ovechkin-802-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">803 career goals<\/a> and put him second all-time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This level of skill and excellence in the league is not new. League scoring was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/2021-22-by-the-numbers-a-season-of-smashed-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highest in the 2021-22 season<\/a> since 1995-96, and if scoring continues at the same rate, the 2022-23 season will soar even higher. But the true reason behind the increase in remarkable performances is more unclear. Maybe it comes from teams getting a full off-season for the first time since the start of the pandemic. It could be due to a changing game, one that is more reliant on skill and less on the \u201cenforcer\u201d types of the \u201880s. Or it could just be that the players are better.
