On Washington&#8217;s side, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/06\/18\/nicklas-backstrom-undergoes-career-risking-surgery\/\" target=\"_self\">first-line center<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backsni02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicklas Backstrom<\/a>, and feared enforcer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsoto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Wilson<\/a> will be absent. On Boston&#8217;s end, superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marchbr03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Marchand<\/a>, and top-pairing defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcavoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/05\/27\/brad-marchand-injured-miss-start-season\/\" target=\"_self\">won&#8217;t be dressed<\/a>. Needless to say, this first game of the season will not be the best for either team.<\/p>\n<p>This game does however note several interesting storylines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a> will begin his mission to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> in goals (780 for Ovechkin, 801 for Howe), for second all-time behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>. Washington&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/13\/darcy-kuemper-signs-new-contract-as-free-agent\/\" target=\"_self\">fresh goaltending<\/a> duo of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuempda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darcy Kuemper<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindgch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Lindgren<\/a> will also see its first regular-season action. While Carolina made significant changes in the off-season, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/13\/brent-burns-trade-goes-to-hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">bringing in<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burnsbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Burns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/13\/max-pacioretty-traded-to-carolina\/\" target=\"_self\">and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pacioma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Pacioretty<\/a> (who will be <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/08\/10\/max-pacioretty-sidelined-with-injury\/#:~:text=Max%20Pacioretty%20will%20be%20sidelined,they%20have%20been%20searching%20for.\" target=\"_self\">sidelined with injury<\/a> long-term), it was Columbus who made the biggest off-season move. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/13\/report-johnny-gaudreau-contract-signed-leaves-calgary-flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Signing free agent superstar<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaudrjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Gaudreau<\/a> to a seven-year deal, Columbus is looking to perform above the ~.500 point percentage they&#8217;ve been hovering around for the past few seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricanes are hoping to contend for a Stanley Cup this season and will come out the gate strong with one of the scariest rosters in the league. Two teams in entirely different situations, the Leafs will be competing for a spot at the top of the conference, while the Canadiens appear to be competing for a spot at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens will be dressing three players with zero games of NHL experience. These players are <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/13\/juraj-slafkovsky-signs-three-year-deal-with-montreal\/\" target=\"_self\">2022 first overall pick<\/a> Juraj Slafkovsky, 2020 16th overall pick Kaiden Guhle, and undrafted rookie sensation Arber Xhekaj. The Maple Leafs will be premiering their fully <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/12\/toronto-maple-leafs-goaltending-need-addressed-ahead-of-free-agency\/\" target=\"_self\">new goaltending duo<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrama02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Murray<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/samsoil01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilya Samsonov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/suzukni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Suzuki<\/a> will be playing in his first game as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/09\/12\/nick-suzuki-named-captain-canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Canadiens captain<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dadonev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgenii Dadonov<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/monahse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Monahan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dachki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirby Dach<\/a> will make their debut in blue-blanc-rouge. Dadonov had a rough camp and will be delegated to fourth-line duties alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/evansja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Evans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pitlire01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rem Pitlick<\/a>. Monahan impressed during camp and will earn some middle-six minutes. Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/07\/07\/montreal-canadiens-alexander-romanov-traded-to-islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">draft-day acquisition<\/a> Dach will center the teams&#8217; second-line, and second power play. For the Leafs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tavarjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Tavares<\/a> appears to be recovered from his injury woes and might play.
