Sutter led Calgary to a 50-21-11 record for 111 points last season, finishing first in the Pacific Division. He has a 65-36-11 record since signing with the Flames during the 2020-21 season.

“I think first off, Brad [Treliving] and I talked about it all summer,” Sutter said. “The plan was to get our players taken care of. Talk to him and (owner) Murray (Edwards), and it’s not that hard to figure out. It’s still the basis of what I said when I came here. Good team. Good city. Good owners. It wasn’t that hard.”

This is Sutter’s second reign as Flames head coach. He was first hired by Calgary midway through the 2002-03 season after being fired by the San Jose Sharks. Sutter took the 2003-04 Flames to the Stanley Cup Final but lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was fired following the 2005-06 season after the team lost in the first round of the playoffs to an underdog Anaheim Ducks team.

Sutter is entering his 21st year of head coaching in the NHL. His overall coaching record is 699-503-94 with 101 ties. He has coached the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Los Angelos Kings, and Calgary Flames. Sutter won two Stanley Cups as coach of the Kings.

“That’s our coach! The team’s management fully trusts Sutter, and he has, without question, turned the franchise into a legit Cup contender. Treliving called the Sutter signing a “no-brainer.” With the acquisition of Jonathan Huberdeau, among others, this offseason Treliving and the Flames are doubling down on their playoff window.

Sutter ranks 11th in all-time wins as a head coach.
