However, teams are already thinking about the future. The flat cap era is forcing teams to make some tough decisions and be smart with their money. It’ll be hard for general managers to keep players in the fold. One player looking to cash in next off-season is David Pastrnak. Today’s NHL rumours look at what a David Pastrnak extension may command for the Boston Bruins.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

David Pastrnak Seeks Huge Extension

Sun Hockey Notes: @GlobeKPD: What will it take for a youngster to crack the Bruins lineup this season? https://t.co/0YjyuqaW3E via @BostonGlobe

— Kevin Paul Dupont (@GlobeKPD) September 11, 2022

Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe looked at what an extension may look like for the Czech forward. Pastrnak is in the last year of his deal and looking to get a raise. The 26-year-old currently makes nearly $6.7 million per season with the Bruins.

Pastrnak has reached the 30-goal mark in every season he’s played more than 60 games. The winger earned his second 40-goal season of his career and has been a valuable member of the Perfection Line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron.

However, goal scoring doesn’t come cheap and the Bruins know this. General manager Don Sweeney would like to lock down Pastrnak, but his contract demands could be large. There also might be an air of uneasiness after Pastrnak’s coach, Bruce Cassidy, was fired in the off-season. It seems to be water under the bridge, but one never knows.

What it Means

Dupont pointed out that Pastrnak could be eyeing a deal similar to what Charlie McAvoy got. The defenceman received a deal that will see him make $9.5 million per season. This deal runs until the end of the 2029-30 season and could be something to what Pastrnak wants.

The main issue is trying to find space for the dynamic scorer. Patrice Bergeron, Craig Smith, Pavel Zacha and Nick Foligno all have their contracts coming off the books at the end of the season. While that creates some space, the Bruins will also have to either re-sign some of them or replace them. There is also the issue of trying to find money to pay for goalie Jeremy Swayman. He could command $3.5-4 million for his next contract.

Boston would love to keep their main goal-scorer. We’ll have to see how his production is affected with Marchand missing out on at least the first couple of months of the season. The two sides would like to reach a deal where Pasta’s feelings aren’t hurt.

Let’s try to recap:

Patrice Bergeron | 🚨🍎🍎
David Pastrnak | 🍎🍎🍎
Brad Marchand | 🚨🚨
Jake DeBrusk | 🚨🍎
Matt Grzelcyk | 🚨🍎
Marc McLaughlin | 🚨
Erik Haula | 🚨
Taylor Hall | 🚨
Charlie McAvoy | 🍎
Trent Frederic | 🍎
Mike Reilly | 🍎
Hampus Lindholm | 🍎 pic.twitter.com/RR17LBSi9p

— Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) April 1, 2022

Training camp is almost here and we can feel the start of hockey upon us.
