The former Boston Bruins head coach made six straight playoff appearances and had an overall record of 245-108-46.<br \/>\nSweeney\u2019s search for the 29th head coach in franchise history ended on July 1st. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/montgji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Montgomery<\/a>, former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a> bench boss, was named the Boston Bruins head coach. Montgomery\u2019s second head coaching gig begins this season, so what does this mean for the Bruins? Furthermore, how will players respond to the new man in town?<\/p>\n<h2>Jim Montgomery Has Opportunity for Success as Boston Bruins Head Coach<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Boston Bruins Former Head Coach Bruce Cassidy\u2019s Exodus<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\">Before the August 8th announcements of re-signing <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/08\/08\/patrice-bergeron-extended-bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Patrice Bergeron<\/a>, the return of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/08\/08\/david-krejci-returns-to-the-boston-bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">David Krejci<\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and the signing of summer <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">acquisition <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/08\/08\/boston-bruins-sign-forward-to-deal\/\" target=\"_self\">Pavel Zacha,<\/a> the Boston Bruins offseason had been largely lacklustre. Their most significant move was the June 6th firing of head coach Bruce Cassidy. After leading Boston into the playoffs in his six seasons at the helm, including one trip to the Stanley Cup final, Don Sweeney was faced with making what he called \u201c an extremely difficult decision.\u201d The Bruin&#8217;s General manager also commented on the decision saying,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/985thesportshub.com\/2022\/06\/07\/bruins-find-their-scapegoat-with-firing-of-bruce-cassidy\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cAfter taking some time to fully digest everything, I felt that the direction of our team for both this season and beyond would benefit from a new voice.\u201d<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cassidy\u2019s Questionable Relationship With Bruins Players<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Many questions have been raised about the relationship between Cassidy and some of his players. Sweeney, however, insists players were not driving the bus on his decision to fire Cassidy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Jake Debrusk, who saw time as a healthy scratch under Cassidy, ultimately requested a trade last season. After being moved to the top line with Bergeron and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marchbr03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Marchand<\/a>, Debrusk\u2019s production picked up. He ended the season with 25 goals, just two short of his career high of 27 set back in 2018-19. Since Cassidy\u2019s firing, the Bruins winger has rescinded his trade request, as confirmed by Sweeney on July 6th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/krejcda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Krejci<\/a> also made comments back in January raising questions about his relationship with the former coach. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bostonhockeynow.com\/2022\/01\/08\/krejci-finds-it-strange-boston-bruins-are-moving-pastrnak\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coach Cassidy rarely let the two of us play together. It had to be so that he split the first line and put Pasta to me. It was a maximum of two matches. Years later, I leave Boston, and suddenly it\u2019s possible. That struck me,\u201d<\/a> said Krejci <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumours of a Krejci return also picked up at the time of the coach\u2019s dismissal, and the longtime Bruins center officially signed a new contract with Boston on August 8th. On August 11th Krejci denied that the coaching change was a reason for his return.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\">Former Bruin forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backeda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Backes<\/a> also had remarks about Coach Cassidy stating on the Cam and Strick podcast that \u201cWe had different views of how hockey should be played\u201d he went on to add that \u201cHe was a smaller, puck-moving defenseman, and I tried to eat smaller puck-moving defensemen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Jim Montgomery Officially Hired as Boston Bruins Head Coach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After three weeks of a search for the B\u2019s new head coach, the Bruins brass found the man for the job. Enter Jim Montgomery. Who, some may ask? Jim Montgomery. The 53-year-old, former Dallas Stars bench boss Montgomery, was named the next head coach of the Boston Bruins on July 1st.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">New Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yMwkAEfBpe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/yMwkAEfBpe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Conor Ryan (@ConorRyan_93) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ConorRyan_93\/status\/1546562455706505217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 11, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Montgomery is shipping up to Boston following a two-year stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St Louis Blues<\/a> serving as an assistant coach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/berubcr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Berube<\/a>. The Montreal-born Montgomery previously served as Dallas Stars head coach before being fired for \u201ca personal behaviour issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When taking a deeper look at his coaching history and underlying numbers, this will be a nice transition for the Bruins.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Montgomery\u2019s Coaching History<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-align: left; font-size: 16px;\">Before starting his coaching career, Jim Montgomery had a professional playing career from 1993-2005, with most of his time spent in the minors, bouncing around from a few organizations. Montgomery began his coaching career in 2006, serving as an assistant coach at the college level for five years. He then went on to spend the next five seasons as head coach of the Denver Pioneers in the NCAA. In 2017 Montgomery helped the team capture a national championship. At the end of his coaching tenure in the NCAA, he finished with a 125-57-26 record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Head Coach of the Dallas Stars<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On May 4 of, 2018 \u201cMonty\u201d was officially named the head coach of the Dallas Stars. This was his first look as a bench boss in the big leagues. The Stars finished his first season fourth in the Central division with a record of 43-32-7. The Stars ranked 29th of 31 with 210 Goals For and second in the league with 202 goals against. This was good enough to qualify for the playoffs in a wild card position. The Stars would win the first round against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/predators\/\" target=\"_self\">Nashville Predators<\/a> before falling to the St Louis Blues in a hard-fought seven-game series. The Blues would eventually go on to be named Stanley Cup champions that season, winning the cup against the Bruins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While the Stars were off to a record of 17-11-3 on December 10, 2019, Stars GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nillji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Nill<\/a> announced Montgomery was fired due to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/stars-fire-head-coach-jim-montgomery-due-unprofessional-conduct\/?template=basic&amp;template=basic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the National Hockey League.&#8221; <\/a>At the time of his firing, the Stars had surrendered a Western Conference-best 76 Goals Against.\u00a0 The Stars&#8217; power play ranked 11th in 2018-19, clocking in at a 21.03 % rate. Their penalty kill ranked fifth at an 82.77% success rate.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Monty Returns as an Assistant Coach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Montgomery didn\u2019t return behind an NHL bench until September 2020, when the blues brought him in as an assistant coach. St.Louis clinched playoff berths in both seasons he was there. The Blues PP finished sixth in the shortened 2020-21 season and third in 2021-22. He significantly improved the Blues&#8217; PK going from 25th in 2020-21 to fifth overall last season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bruins PP finished 15th last season, while the penalty kills finished ninth. They will see some improvement in special teams under Monty\u2019s guidance. Having Krejci back will give the coach more threatening options on the man advantage.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Jim Montgomery and What He Brings to the Bruins<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montgomery\u2019s history makes him believe he is a perfect fit for the Bruins. Boston has an uncertain future, with aging veterans nearing the end of their careers. His experience coaching at the NCAA level will be vital. The B\u2019s have a plethora of players who played NCAA hockey. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithcr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coylech01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Coyle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Carlo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcavoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fredetr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trent Frederic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grzelma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Grzelcyk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cliftco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor Clifton<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/swaymje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Swayman<\/a>, and Mike Rielly all come through college ranks. Boston will be somewhere in the top five in goals against under the new coach. Expect a new career high in goals for Debrusk, who is a prime candidate to excel under the new coach. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hallta02,hallta01&amp;search=Taylor+Hall&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Hall<\/a> is another player who should excel under Montgomery. Hall had excellent chemistry with Krejci after being traded to Boston. A Hall-Krejci-Pastrnak line will give Boston the second line punch they need behind Marchand-Bergeron-Debrusk<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\">Critical off-season injuries will have the Bruins opening night roster missing some big names. Marchand, McAvoy, and Grzelcyk will start the season on long-term injured reserve. It will be a challenging start for the new coach. The Bruins&#8217; ability to keep pace early in a vastly improved Atlantic division will be crucial. Jim Montgomery has made the playoffs in every season he\u2019s been behind an NHL bench.
