At the modest price of a fifth-round pick, Colorado has added toughness up front, offensive depth, and a veteran presence to a team gearing up for a Stanley Cup run.

At 34-years old, Cogliano still has a skillset that playoff teams covet. First, he provides Colorado with some toughness and grit in the forward group. In his 15-year NHL career, Cogliano has amassed over 1,200 hits and averaged 14:29 minutes per game. Second, Cogliano provides some depth to Colorado’s forward group, something the Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic knows is very valuable come playoff time.

Offensively, the Avs are dealing with an injury to star left-winger Gabriel Landeskog. While Cogliano is no replacement for Landeskog, he will provide depth at the position in the interim. Finally, Cogliano gives Colorado another veteran voice in the locker room and on the ice. Many top contenders seek to add veteran voices this time of year, and Cogliano provides that.

What This Means For The Future

For San Jose, this trade will not have much of an effect. Cogliano will be a UFA this summer, and getting a return for him now is beneficial for the future. With the recent extension of Tomas Hertl, the Sharks have indicated that they are looking towards the future. By adding a draft pick, the Sharks can continue looking toward the future and building a young team around its core.

Both sides come out with something in this straightforward deal. For Colorado, they add a veteran voice and bolster their offensive depth. For San Jose, they receive a draft pick to use in the future.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Colorado Avalance is continuing to bolster their squad for a playoff run.
